The park glowed golden in the late afternoon light. Maia and Layla walked hand in hand along the familiar path, the crunch of gravel beneath their feet providing a comforting rhythm. It had been weeks since they had done this together.
"I've missed this," Layla admitted, squeezing Maia's arm. "Not just the talking. The ease of our friendship."
Maia nodded. "It's been a lot, with Mark and Chloe, the jealousy work, the scheduling ... I feel like I'm learning a whole new language of relationships."
"That's exactly what it is, Layla laughed. "And step by step you're getting more fluent."
"I know what some people would say: 'Figure out your own relationship first before you start adding more people to the mix.' But life doesn't wait for us to be perfectly ready. If we want to grow, we might as well start now rather than waiting for some theoretical day in the distant future."
They walked in silence for a moment, past the old oak where they had first talked about relational networks and the widespread mycelium beneath their feet.
"Dorian and I have been spending more time together," Layla said. "It's really beautiful. There's a lot of trust between us. I feel like I already know him well as I continue to discover more."
Before Maia could stop it, a surprising thought surfaced: I want this too, whispered a voice inside. She let it sit there, unashamed, and found that it felt like a relief. "I've been holding back," she admitted. "Partly because of my own inner work with Mark and Chloe. But also because I didn't want to overwhelm him. He's been so patient."
Layla stopped walking and turned to face her. A warm, playful smile spread across her face. "What if we saw him together again? I've been wanting to feel the three of us again. It feels good to share these energies together. It expands my heart. And I have a feeling you want this too?"
Maia felt a deep, complex flutter of nervous excitement in her stomach. She thought of Dorian's calm presence, of his warm hands in hers and of how his body had felt when she held him. Of course she wanted more of that. She had just not been allowing herself to fully acknowledge the wish.
"I'll talk to Mark," she said quickly.
Mark was putting away some dishes when Maia arrived home. She hugged him from behind, stood beside him and took his hand. She then told him about Layla's suggestion, adding that it could imply some closeness.
"I'm not sure how I feel about it," Mark said. "Give me a moment." He had learnt to let a feeling sink in before reacting to it.
Two voices spoke inside him. One was about scarcity and the idea of being left behind while everyone else has a beautiful adventure. The other was about wanting Maia to open her heart much wider, and he knew this was the way forward.
He looked at her, willing to work through his uncomfortable feelings. "I think my fears are about me. Not you and not Dorian. But I want us to grow as a couple, so I'll figure it out."
Maia was glad that she had been so honest with herself and with him. "I want to experience this," she said. "But I also want you to feel safe. So let's talk boundaries. What would make this okay for you?"
They sat down, talked to each other and worked out what felt right for both of them and how they could feel safe. They came to three clear agreements:
- Sensual and tender, yes, but nothing penetrative.
- Maia would text Mark when she was getting ready to leave.
- And no matter how late or how tired they were, they would do a little reconnection ritual.
...
A few days later, the evening with Dorian came. Before she left, Maia found Mark in the living room and took his hands in hers. "Thank you," she said to him once more. "For sitting with it. For trusting me. The boundaries actually make me feel safer as well."
Dorian's apartment was warm and softly lit. Layla was already there when Maia arrived. Maia felt a little nervous, but reminded herself that they were just three humans who liked and trusted each other.
After exchanging some casual conversation, they settled onto the worn sofa with soft and cosy cushions. Layla curled up in one corner, pulling her knees up and hugging them with her arms. Dorian sat in the middle with his arm resting on the back of the sofa. Maia hesitated for only a brief moment before snuggling up to his other side.
They chatted for a while – nothing deep, just friends catching up. At one point, Layla reached across and started idly playing with Dorian's fingers. Maia watched the way she caressed his palm. Without thinking about it, Maia found herself leaning more closely into Dorian, her hand coming to rest on his chest. She could feel his steady heartbeat as she started to caress him in small, pleasurable circles. He sighed contentedly and let his head fall back against the cushions.
"Okay, if I just ..." Layla began, shifting position. Before she could finish, Dorian turned too, facing away from her and allowing her to press her thighs and knees against his hips. "Like that?" he asked, easing into her. Layla wrapped her arms around his waist. Her chin rested on his shoulder. "If that's comfortable for you?" she replied.
Maia smiled. This put her at the front. She turned to face him fully, kneeling sideways on the sofa with her knees apart. Dorian held her waist with his hands. She continued to stroke his chest, now with even greater tenderness and presence, as if her hands were listening intently to his skin.
No one spoke. Layla's warm breath brushed against Dorian's neck. Maia's forehead came to rest against his. The world outside the sofa ceased to exist.
Layla's hands found their way under Dorian's shirt and began moving in slow, soothing strokes along his stomach. He moaned in a long, trembling release, and his hands tightened on Maia's back, drawing her closer.
"This is nice," Maia whispered. Dorian hummed in agreement. Layla pressed a kiss on his neck.
Dorian closed his eyes while his breathing became deeper. The smile on his face revealed how cared for he felt. His body began to tremble from the overwhelming sensation of such tender attention and caresses.
Nothing was planned. Three souls choosing to be tender with each other. They simply followed what felt good: touching, holding, receiving, until the boundaries between giving and getting blurred into something that felt like home.
The evening unfolded like a flower. At some point, clothes began to feel like barriers. One by one, shirts were removed and set aside. An expression of trust. Dorian's skin felt warm under Maia's hands. Layla's bare breasts pressed against his back as she held him. They embraced each other with delicious slowness. Three bodies were discovering a new language of sacred sensuality without shame: being seen, being touched, simply being present with each other. Much was shared in that silence: vulnerability, tenderness and the quiet miracle of breathing together through their hearts.
When they finally pulled apart, Maia checked her phone. She texted Mark: "I'm heading home now. That was beautiful. Will tell you everything." Then she added, "Thank you for letting me have this."
The drive home was quiet, the streets nearly empty. The evening's glow was still with her, leaving behind a deep, settled peace. Even now, alone in the car, she felt held. The three of them had created something beautiful, and she was taking a part of it home with her.
Mark was sitting on the sofa with his notebook on his knees when she walked in. He looked up and smiled. "Hey," he said.
"Hey," Maia replied, kicking off her shoes.
She sat down beside him, and glanced at the page he had just started writing on: Skill 12: Continuous Learning and Unlearning. Mark put the notebook to one side, turned to her, and they held each other in a long, loving hug.
"Can we do the ritual?" he asked. "I need to feel you fully."
"Yes. What did you have in mind?"
"Maybe what I call the Brief Retelling? We hold hands and each of us says one special thing that happened today. The other just listens. We can share more details later if you like; this is just to help us reconnect."
Mark held out his palm to her and she took it.
"I want to share something," he said. "While you were gone, I felt a lump in my stomach. Around eight o'clock. I thought about texting you, asking if you were okay. But I knew that was my jealousy talking, not my concern for you." He paused. "So I just breathed and then wrote in the notebook. And after about twenty minutes, it passed."
Maia squeezed his hand. "Thank you for telling me. And for not texting."
He nodded. "Your turn," he said.
She told him about the moment she took her shirt off. "It just happened and felt right," she said. It felt ... sacred! It was like we were discovering a new way to be close, without possession and without shame. It was so beautiful."
Mark listened. When she had finished speaking, he stood up from the sofa and reached for her. "How about a welcoming hugging meditation in yab yum? No clothes?"
She stood up and let him undress her. Then she undressed him. He sat down on the large floor cushion and she nestled in his lap, wrapping her legs around his waist, their chests touching. They held each other in their arms and both breathed through their heart centres.
Maia felt a wave of gratitude for Mark's willingness to wait for her, to welcome her home, and to hold her without needing to possess her. Mark felt the warmth of her skin and realised that she had chosen to come home to him. This meant everything to him.
Later, lying tangled together in bed, Mark said, "I learned something tonight. Waiting for you can be an act of LOVE. It's a choice I'm making because I want you to get what you desire. And I wasn't afraid of losing you."
Maia turned her head on the pillow to look at him. "That's wonderful."
"I'm trying," he replied. "To unlearn the old stories. The ones that say if you're happy even without me, then I'm not enough."
She reached for his hand under the covers. "And I learned that I can experience LOVE and care with someone else without having to make it sexual. I was afraid that if I opened myself to Dorian, I wouldn't know where to stop. But tonight, I just let it be what it was: Tender and beautiful."
They lay in silence for a moment.
"You know what I'm grateful for?" Mark said.
"What?"
"That we can discover these new forms of LOVE together and are not afraid to grow."
"Some days I still am," she said, kissing him. "But I do it anyway."
