{b}
God said, “I loved
Jacob, and I hated
Esau” (Mal.1:2-3).
{5}
The narrative and conflict
between Jacob (Later called
Israel) and Esau (Edom) is
prophetic or foreshadowing
of the many years of conflict
between the people of Israel
and the people of Edom, (2
Samuel 8:12-14; 2 Kings
8:20-22; Psalms 137:7).
{6}
More will be said about the
birthright and the
consequences of what Esau
(Edom) did when we look at
the section dealing with
Some characteristics or traits
of both Edom and his nation.
2)
Esau's name means "hairy".
a)
Esau was, like David the shepherd-boy, “ruddy”, or of a reddish complexion
b)
He was hairy and red at birth, Genesis 25:25
describes Esau’s birth by saying that he “came out red, all over like a hairy garment, and they called his name Esau.”
c)
He was also called Edom, which means "red".
d)
A play on words is found in Genesis 25:29-34 in the fact that Esau (Edom) sold his birth right to Jacob for some "red stew."
(1)
It is important to compare Esau (Edom) to
Jacob, God's chosen servant who carefully
planed things.
(2)
When we make this comparison we are
taught two valuable lessons from Esau
(Edom).
