c)

Esau (Edom) was a cunning hunter, a man who loved the outdoors. He was nomadic as were the Edomites, his nation.

d)

An important thing to remember about Esau is that he was a twin.

(1)

He was the older twin of Jacob (who would

later be named Israel).

(2)

The fact that Esau was older if only by a few minutes was very significant.

(a)

Esau was entitled to the birth right as

well as also being entitled to a

special blessing from his Isaac his

father.

{1}

The birthright was the

covenant of God and

Abraham that God will be

His God and that he will be

the father of a nation through

his first born son.

{2}

Esau sold his birthright and

Jacob with Rebekah helping,

tricked Isaac into giving the

blessing to Jacob.

{3}

Esau became enraged with

anger and tried to kill Jacob.

Jacob fled.

{4}

Selling the birthright is

evidence that Esau would

show respect for holy things

only when it did not

inconvenience him in his

personal pursuits and desires.

{a}

God’s response to

Esau’s outlook on life

is recorded clearly in

Malachi 1:23.
