Wilder Than the Heart Within Us

How You give us

a little piece of ourselves

that we hold, so small

and warm in pretty blankets.

But as the time wears

and our hair weakens

and breath goes stale

from the sure weight of our bones,

these little pieces now overgrown

and more than we can handle.

Have they always been so sour

and rotten to the touch?

And that’s when Your reminder

pierces our heavy bones,

and submission is no longer

a game we sometimes play

but the only way we can tame

this little piece of ourselves

that’s wilder than the heart

within us.
