PASSING HOEYANG (Seven character, Quatrain)

Hoeyang was in Kangwŏn Province. The rhyme is yang/sang/hyang; tones match.

The poem is traditionally translated as follows:

The mountain lass is as big as her mother.

She wears a short, loose-fitting, pink, hemp skirt.

Ashamed of revealing flesh colored legs to a wayfarer,

she runs inside the pine fence: her pleasure is in flower fragrance.

A sŏdang teacher offers a much more exciting version:

The mountain lass was as big as her mother.

She wore make-up, an open blouse and a short hemp skirt.

Her bare legs and sexy walk blushed the wayfarer’s cheeks;

he longed for flower fragrance in the deep bower within the pine fence.
