TO PITY, A KISAENG (Seven character, P’agyŏk)
Obviously at odds with the tradition, the poem is built around a series of puns on a kisaeng's name, “Pity” (ryŏn): the pity word occurs twice in each line.
A pitiful wretch with pitiful aspect
seeks pity at Pity’s door.
Should my pitiful need be conveyed to Pity,
Pity will acknowledge my pitiful heart.
