Chapter 16. The Dark Ascent

The bright ascent showed what the Sephiroth do to a will. The Qliphoth now offer themselves as the escape from it. There is a second climb up the other side of the Tree, and to the one who has seen the surrender the shining ladder demanded, this dark one looks like a refusal of everything the shining ladder asked. Here is a ladder the God of the Sephiroth does not rule, running from the black earth to a crown of twin gods.
The initiate begins at Nahemoth, the reflection of the cosmos, and works upward through the stations: the lunar dreamwork of Gamaliel, the Poison of God embodied in Samael, the Black Sun of Thagirion, the wrath of Golachab, and on toward Satariel, Ghagiel, and the split summit of Thaumiel. The methods answer the stations. The magician visualizes each Qliphah and calls its ruler, invokes the archdemons of the spheres and the fiends of the tunnels between them, pries open the gaps through dreamwork, sexual rite, and chanted names, and moves his awareness up the dark tree as the bright practitioner moved his up the shining one. Karlsson built a grade system on these spheres, the Temple of Ascending Flame charts them as a map of Draconian initiation, Jehannum lays out a rite for each station in his Rites of Acharayim, and Liber Azerate provides sigils and enns. The apparatus is developed; it aims up.
That is the tell. A ladder of stations climbed toward a summit is the shape of the thing diagnosed above, and reversing its direction leaves the shape intact. Where the bright ascent drew the soul toward the One and called the pull its longing, the dark ascent directs the initiate toward Thaumiel and calls the pull his will. But a will that runs the length of a fixed ladder to a fixed crown is a will bound. The Qliphoth, followed as a rule, become another attractor. Thaumiel is the split crown, the multiplicity Kether swept off to stand alone, and it is a summit still, a peak wearing two faces where Kether wore one. The dark ascent ends the way every ascent does, at a crown that gathers the climber in.
The Qliphoth are the reflection. The chart of dark spheres is Acharayim, the backwards tree, the Tree's underside set station against station, and to climb it to the top is to recover every face the Tree dropped and to know the sediment in full. The labor has met its ceiling here: the whole Qliphoth structure raised and inhabited, and the cut beneath them still untouched, as the reflection has the Tree's shape and inherits the Tree's blank. One may walk Acharayim end to end and never leave the Tree.
The orthodox fear here is the slide into pure evil, and the fear is right, though the orthodox misname its cause. To take the Qliphoth as pure inversion, swearing to the dark spheres as the bright devotee swore to the light and becoming the anti-saint whose values are the received standards with their signs flipped, is to build the Tree again in reverse. The content is flipped and the harness is not. Where mercy was the fixed line, now it is cruelty; where the limit held, now the unbound commands; and the will runs the reversed heading as helplessly as it ran the first. A vector obeyed is a vector obeyed, and its sign changes nothing about the obedience. The raging fanatic sworn to the dark pole is no freer than the virtuous fool bound to the bright one. Both are held; each takes his leash for his deepest truth, and the only difference between them is which face of the single cut captured them.
Duality made into a principle and enthroned is a result set hard, and the one who enthrones the dark pole has become the Demiurge of an inverted cosmos, ruling a unity of the many. The better initiates feel this. Working the Nightside from inside, Jehannum gropes after something he has no name for, reaching for what the inherited map cannot yet say. He comes nearest when he restores Daath to the dark tree and counts eleven where the reflection has ten, stumbling on the empty place the sealing left. He carries no frame that could hold the eleventh open, and it goes back into a single Tree with the rest, an opening found without the means to keep it. The sense that pure inversion is one more cage already points toward a third position, the exit from both ladders that neither ladder could show.
Felt, and then missed. If swearing to one pole is a cage, hold both, climb the Sephiroth and the Qliphoth alike and integrate the two into a wholeness that neither gives alone. Jehannum sets Nahemoth as a portal opening onto either tree, allowing a will to cross from any dark sphere to any bright one, binding the two structures into one traversable field; Kenneth Grant had pressed height and depth toward a single image beneath both. The instinct is half right and the resolution is wrong. To climb both trees is still to perform the bright ascent, and that ascent is a union with God, so the one who climbs both still gives himself to merger on the shining side. To fold the two into one wholeness is the first road under a wider name, unity restored by the longest way around. Declaring the two trees one rinses the difference between them into an identity, and the Sitra Achra, whose being is difference held open, can be no identity at all.
The myth of two trees says as much. It tells of the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge bound in a single harmony until Adam severed them, and it names that severing the cutting of the shoots, kiṣṣuṣ ha-neṭi'ot, the archetype of great sins, the common thread of them all being the entry of division into the divine unity. The cardinal sin, the root from which the others branch, is division as such, the drawing of a line where unity stood whole. The ascent through both trees is the labor of undoing that sin. To bind them back into a wholeness is to reverse the cutting of the shoots, to re-seal the division Adam opened and restore the seamless unity. This road never leaves the Tree. It takes the founding act for a primal wound and sets out to heal it. What the myth calls the first sin, the entry of difference into the One, is the first cut, the act we have followed from the beginning, and to mourn it as a fall and strive to close it is to side with the sealing against the cutting. The one who re-binds the trees has done the Demiurge's work with the deepest devotion, mending the very tear through which the Other Side first showed.
Both poles pressed to their limit end in the same stillness, and each sets a will toward something that is no will at all. Drive unity to its end and it congeals into an idol, the motionless crown. Push multiplicity until it reaches its limit and it runs the other way, toward the formless source that holds no cut and no one who cuts. Liber Azerate builds the ascent toward Chaos as the acausal, the one true freedom. It reaches beyond causality but mistakes what it finds there.
Two realities are called acausal, and they are not one. Tiamat is the acausal deep, the undivided where no line is drawn, and to sink into her is to lose freedom, since a will has freedom only in the cut it lays and holds, and the deep holds nothing. The will is acausal as the act that draws a line with no law telling it to fall there. Liber Azerate takes the first for the second, the sourceless abyss for the sovereign act, and so it makes freedom mean dissolution and crowns the place where willing ends as the summit where it is fulfilled. The aim is not the will at all. It is Chaos, the formless outside everything, and a will spent toward it is carried into its own erasure.
Here the two roads meet. Unity gathers the will into the One and the antikosmic road pours it into the Abyss, and both call the vanishing a homecoming, one under the mercy of God and the other under the fury of the dragon. The Black Flame that returns to the formless is quenched as surely as the one that melts into the light, for a flame swallowed by its source is no flame at all. Neither road leaves a will intact.
The practices share one ceiling that follows from what the Qliphoth are. The shells are the Tree's underside, and a path that climbs them therefore arrives at the top of a reflection, not at what it reflects. No ascent of the Qliphoth reaches a godhood worth the name. The summit of the underside is one more sealed cut, Thaumiel where Kether stood, and a divinity conferred there is a heading dressed as a destination. The practitioner who climbs to it and looks for the Sitra Achra finds the wall where the map ends. He either fills the silence with a terminus of his own — a new world entered, a grade attained — or stops and says no more. What none of these systems describes is the Sitra Achra itself, because it was never at the top of the climb. The ascent and apotheosis remain dark for one reason: both were sought as an arrival.
