I got my roscoe from the book and went into the garage. The Ford was there, and I switched the license plates. I was as ready to go to Chicago as one ever is, but just so that she didn’t report the heap as stolen, I went back inside and left Winnie a note on the kitchen table.
“Winnie;
Missed you. Took the car to Chicago to get our money. Don’t tell anyone. When needed get a ride from your mother and tell her the car is in the shop. I won’t be long.
