Part 3
Later that day, in the afternoon, the weather was somewhat overcast due to a drizzle. And my mother and grandmother were seated in a private room, which was inside a storage house located behind the main house.
Well, it was in this storage, within the larger private room that the family had set aside, where they kept and organized important items and documents, including souvenir photos, artifacts, and other significant old materials.
Meanwhile, you must remember that this day marked the beginning of the Carnival, with lively music, parades, and activities happening throughout the city, despite the rain.
So, while my mother and grandmother were in the private room, they were looking at the old family photographs, particularly those of my grandfather, of course.
“Oh my God! What a memory!” My mother said. “I remember the day my father took that photo,” she shared it with my grandmother.
“Indeed! Your father was an incredible man!” My grandmother responded.
“He truly was a diligent worker.” My grandmother added it. “I know, and I take pride in him!” My mother replied. “Thank you for keeping all these old photographs and I am enjoying them!”
“It's as if I'm reliving my past once more,” my mother added. “It's like my life is coming back to me in real time,” my mother expressed.
“Oh, they should have been preserved!”
“If I hadn't taken the initiative to keep them safe, who would have done it for me?”
“This place remains locked so that no one else can enter!”
“Only family members are allowed access, alright?” My grandmother clarified.
“Do you understand?” My grandmother asked her. “Yes mother! I understand!”
“But that’s great! Thank you!” My mother replied gratefully, both gazing at the picture of my late grandfather and the rest of the family. Then a few minutes later, my grandmother showed my mother a very surprising photo.
“What about this picture?”
“Do you remember this one?” My grandmother asked her.
“Which one, mother?” My mother replied. But the truth was this photo was one that deeply resonated with my mother, stirring her emotions.
“Why don’t you take a look at it?”
“Come on! Look at this picture!” My grandmother said as she handed it to my mother.
Upon seeing the old picture, my mother was so moved that it touched her heart.
“Oh my God! Is that me a baby when you were holding me?”
“This is so beautiful!” My mother exclaimed. “Yes, that little baby you see was you on the day I gave birth to you.”
“The man beside me who was holding you was your father,” my grandmother replied.
“Wow mother! This is so great!”
“Can I keep it up?” My mother inquired. “Okay. Go ahead; it's all yours.”
“It’s all yours!” My grandmother responded. “Wow! Thank you!”
“This is memory!” My mother said and smiled. “I vividly remember that day I brought you into this world.”
“Your father and I were filled with joy that day, despite the challenges I faced before your birth.” My grandmother told her more. “Your father adored you just as deeply as I do!”
“Naturally, you are our first and only child.”
“One thing that many people may not realize is that having children is truly a blessing, you see.”
“Your father took great pride in you, and I continue to be proud of you!”
“I express my gratitude to God every single day for you.” She told my mother additionally.
“I understand that family is the most important thing a person can have after God.”
“Thanks for coming to Kingston!”
“I love you, Janie!” My grandmother told my mother again. As my grandmother shared memories with my mother, tears were streaming down her face.
“Oh, mother!”
“I love you too, and I am proud of you as well!”
“Please don’t cry!”
“I love you!” My mother responded, embracing my grandmother and planting a kiss on her cheek.
“Don’t worry.”
“The truth can be painful.”
“At times, the truth can bring tears to your eyes, you know.”
“This is the reason tears are in my eyes.”
“God is incredibly good!” My grandmother said to my mother. “Amen! Hallelujah!”
“I agree and accept everything you share with me, mother!”
“No one speaks more truth than you, and I appreciate your thoughtful mind!” My mother responded to her and hugged her again. “Very well, dear.”
“I truly appreciate it.”
“However, I am quite certain you understand the meanings of Amen and Hallelujah.”
“If you utter them, you must be aware of their significance,” she replied to my mother.
“But, mother, I was raised with those expressions.”
“I trust that you were indeed raised with those expressions,” my mother acknowledged.
“As it commonly said, I also express that sentiment like everyone does,” she added.
“Okay! Thank you for your honesty!” My grandmother replied. To be precise, you should always keep in mind that when my mother and my grandmother were viewing the photographs of their cherished memories in the private room, there were no other individuals, including outsiders, who could access it apart from the family. It wasn't the entire family; you must comprehend that.
