CAMERA MACRO LENS
Macro photography refers to close-up photography; the classical
definition that the image projected on the "film plane" (i.e film or a digital
sensor) is the same size as the subject.
Most smartphone cameras have a built-in
Macro function that is actually reasonable for dental photography
purposes. However, a dedicated Macro lens attached to a DSLR or
mirrorless camera provides much better quality close-up photos, with
higher optical definition and better focus, and is by far the superior choice.

Macro lenses with a focal range between 85-135 mm are all generally suitable for our clinical photography purposes.

The most common focal length is 100mm and a True Macro (1:1) ratio, such as the Canon Macro 100mm F2.8 II USM or L-series version are ideal.
Third-party macro lenses such as those from Sigma, Tokina and Tamron - among others - can also be a great yet less expensive alternative.

BEWARE of Lens Distortion at Different Focal lengths!
Smaller Focal Ranges (Wide Angle Lenses), Such As Those On Most Smartphone
Cameras Cause Barrel Distortion Of Images, Unless Compensated For Through Software
Or Modifying The Photographic Distance From Subject To Minimize The Distortion Effect.
