Chapter 17

A little while later, Wilma pulled her Escort into her driveway and parked next to Laurie's Corolla.

Wilma, Amy, Laurie, and Randall rushed out of the Escort and headed to the front door.

Barney's Impala pulled alongside the curb out in front of Wilma's house and parked.

Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur got out of the Impala and rushed across the front yard to Wilma's front door.

Inside her house, Wilma, Barney, Wilbur, Dorothy, Edith, Amy, Laurie, and Randall rushed into the dining room.

"Where's that book?" Amy asked Randall.

Amy sat down at the dining room table with Wilma.

Randall reached into the cloth bag and removed the old leather book. He rushed over and handed it to Amy.

While Amy opened up the book and searched through the pages of potions, Randall removed the bowl and handmade doll that was inside the bag. He placed those items in front of Amy.

Amy flipped through the pages of the book and strained her eyes to read, as the lettering was getting blurry. She moved the book out as far as her arms would extend. She squinted her eyes while she tried to read the page. "I can't read it," she said and put the book down and was disappointed.

Barney thought for a few seconds then he reached inside the right front pocket of his field jacket. He removes a thick pair of glasses from the inside pocket. He handed them to Amy. "Try these."

Amy placed his glasses on her, and the thick lenses made her eyeballs look three times their size.

She looked at the book and smiled when she could read the page of the book. Amy started scanning all the pages and stopped at a page that was dog-ear marked.  She looked excited. "Here's something that should work," she said while she read the potion on that page.

She glanced at the potion while she looked at the eight bottles of different colored liquids.

"I need some paper and a pen."

"Over in the top center drawer of that cabinet," Wilma told Randall while she pointed at the china cabinet.

Randall rushed over to the china cabinet and removed a pad of paper and pen then rushed them over to Amy.

Amy started jotting down some ingredients from the potion on that page.

After a few minutes of jotting down some needed ingredients, Amy tore off the page from the pad. "Could someone please get me these items pronto?" Amy said while she waved the piece of paper.

Laurie snatched the paper out of Amy's hand. "We'll go," she said while she looked at her brother.

Randall nodded in agreement while he looked at the items on the list.

Laurie glanced at the list of needed items. "Where can we get this stuff?"

Wilma got up and looked at the list. "Looks like she needs some Herbs," Wilma said while the tried to remember where the closest that type of store was located.  After a few seconds, her eyes widened. "Try Helen's Herb Haven located down on Pebble Boulevard. She claims to have the vast majority of the herbs in her place," she told Laurie and Randall.

"I know the place," Randall said while he folded the paper and shoved it in his right rear jeans pocket.

Laurie walked over and kissed Amy on her forehead. "We'll be back," she said then removed her car keys from her jeans pocket.

Everybody in the dining room watched while Laurie and Randall rushed out of the dining room and heard the front door open and slammed shut.

Outside Wilma's house, Laurie and Randall ran to her Corolla and got inside.

She started up her car and tires screeched while she backed down the driveway.

Laurie raced her Corolla down Cactus Lane.

"Turn left up here," Randall said.

Laurie screeched her Corolla into a left turn onto Eagle Lane. Randall grabbed onto his door handle to avoid landing in Laurie's lap.

Laurie raced her Corolla down Eagle Lane and weaved around traffic.

"Turn right up here," Randall said.

Laurie screeched her Corolla into a right turn onto Rocky Lane.

Laurie raced her Corolla down Rocky Lane and weaved around traffic like she was in a NACAR race.

"Good driving Miss Earnhardt," Randall said, teasing his sister.

Laurie looked proud of her driving while she raced her Corolla down the street.

"Turn left at the third street up ahead," Randall said.

A little while later, Laurie made a screeching left turn onto Pebble Boulevard.

Laurie raced her Corolla down Pebble Boulevard.

"There's the place on the other side of the road," Randall said while he watched Laurie race past the shop. "You missed it," he told Laurie,

"Hold on!" she cried out while she slammed on her brakes.

Randall's eyes widened in fear while Laurie made a screeching tire-smoking 180-degree turn in front of oncoming cars.

After the smoke cleared, Laurie stomped on the gas pedal and raced back to Helen's Herb Haven.

Laurie screeched her Corolla to a stop along the curb near the store.  Her car stopped four inches from the back of Mercedes Benz.

Laurie and Randall jumped out of her car and ran down the sidewalk to the store.

Helen, a sixty-two-year-old ex-hippie from the nineteen sixties with long braided white hair, locked the entrance door to her store.

Helen walked away down the sidewalk toward her yellow Volkswagen Beetle parked a little way down the street.

"Excuse me," Laurie said a little out of breath while she ran up to Helen.

Helen turned around and saw Laurie and Randall running up behind her. Her first thoughts were that the two teenagers were going to mug her, so she reached inside her purse and placed a hand on her mace.

"We need some items from the store," Laurie told Helen.

Helen looked at her watch. "It's late, and I want to go home,' she said and turned around and headed to her Beetle.

"I know. But it's a matter of life and death," Laurie pleaded.

Helen turned around. "It's been a long day, and I'm tired," she said then turned back around and headed to her Beetle.

Randall rushed over and stood in front of Helen. He dropped to one knee, grabbed one of Helen's hands, and kissed it. "I'll pay double," he said then while he held her hand and gave her the saddest puppy dog eyes.

Helen took a sudden interest in Randall and thought he was charming and adorable. "Okay, what do you need?" she said while she gazed into Randall's eyes while he was still on his one knee.

Randall got up, removed the folded paper from his rear back pocket. He unfolded it and showed it to Helen.

"Not a problem," she said while she looked at Randall with a little love in her eyes.

"Thank you," Randall said and got so excited he kissed Helen on her cheek.

Helen had a loving smile while she walked Laurie, Randall, back to her store and let them inside.

It only took five minutes for Helen to find all of the five Herbs on the list.

Laurie and Randall waited by the cash register while Helen rang up the Herbs.

"That will be thirty-eight dollars and thirty-five cents," Helen told Randall and gazed into his eyes.

Randall removed his wallet and withdrew a $40 bill. "Keep the change," he told Helen when he handed her the cash.

"So, what's your name?" Helen asked Randall while she placed the Herb into a paper bag.

"Randall."

"Well, Randall, I was wondering if I could see you again," Helen asked while she winked at Randall.

Laurie turned around and fought hard to burst out laughing.

"I'm still in high school," Randall blurted out.

Helen looked disappointed; then, her eyes lit up with an idea. "Come see me the minute you turn eighteen," she said and winked at Randall.

Laurie grabbed the paper bag off the counter. "He will," she called out while she grabbed Randall's arm and rushed to the door.

Helen looked disappointed that Randall rushed away too quick.

Outside the store, Laurie and Randall ran down the sidewalk to her car.

"I had a female interested in me for the first time in my life," Randall said and felt like a stud.

"Yeah and she was older than mom," Laurie said then started laughing at Randall.

He didn't care if she thought this was funny since he knew he now had a chance of getting a girlfriend.

Laurie and Randall got inside her Corolla.

Laurie screeched her car away down Pebbles Boulevard.

Helen stood out by the door to her shop and watched Randall while the Corolla raced away down the street.

It was the same NASCAR venture back to Wilma's house while Laurie raced her car back down Eagle Lane and then Rocky Lane.

She made a screeching right turn back onto Cactus Lane and raced to Wilma's house.

Laurie whipped her Corolla into Wilma's driveway and stopped causing Randall to bang his forehead into the dashboard.

Laurie and Randall got out with the paper bag and ran to Wilma's front door.

Inside Wilma's house, Amy, Wilma, Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur waited in the living room and looked worried that those items couldn't be found.

The front door opened and slammed shut.

"We got it," Randall cried out while he and Laurie ran into the dining room then looked worried when they saw it was empty.

"Great!" Amy called out from the living room.

Amy, Wilma, Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur jumped out of their seats in the living room and rushed into the dining room.

Randall handed Amy the paper bag.

Amy sat back down at the dining room table with Wilma. She opened up the bag, removed the items, and placed them on the table. She checked the things from Helen's Herb Haven against the list she wrote and smiled.

Ten minutes later, Amy had all the contents of the four of the eight bottles of different colored liquids poured into the bowl.  She started adding the correct portions of the Herbs into the bowl then stirred the contents.

Amy read the potion. "I need some scissors and a lighter, Wilma."

Wilma got up and rushed over to her china cabinet. She opened up a drawer and removed a pair of scissors and a lighter. She rushed back to Amy and placed the items on the table.

Amy let some of her white hair dangle over the bowl. She grabbed the scissors and cut some of her hair.

Everybody watched while the strands of white hair floated down to the bowl. The liquid lightly sizzled and smoked the second the hair made contact with the liquid.

"I now need some hair from a beautiful young teenager," Amy said while she looked at Laurie.

"Why, I think you need me," Laurie jokingly replied while she walked over to Amy.

Laurie let her hair dangle over the bowl.

Amy took the scissors and cut off some of her hair.

Everybody watched while Laurie's hair floated down to the bowl. The liquid lightly sizzled and smoked the second the hair made contact with the liquid.

Amy read the potion then she grabbed one of the bottles with lime green liquid inside. She got a look of extreme pain on her face. Her eyes crossed, and she fainted. Her face slammed on the table, and she dropped the bottle.

Everybody looked scared, thinking Amy died.

"Did she croak?" Barney asked and looked worried.

"Barney, don't talk like that," Wilma scolded him.

Randall rushed over and felt her neck. "She has a pulse."

"Let's take her to the hospital," Wilma said.

Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur rushed out of the dining room and headed to the front door.

Randall, Laurie, and Wilma grabbed Amy and carried her out of the dining room.

Randall, Laurie, and Wilma carried Amy out of Wilma's house and over to her Escort.

They placed Amy in the back seat of the Escort.

Wilma got in the Escort with Laurie.

Randall got in Barney's Impala with Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur.

Barney's Impala and Wilma's Escort all raced down Sandbar Lane.

It was a NASCAR race with Wilma's car in the lead and Barney's Impala hot on the rear of the Escort.

Randall sat in the rear seat of the Impala with Dorothy.

He was to death he was going to die with Barney at the wheel.

Later that morning, Amy lay in an examination room bed in the Emergency Ward of the West Valley Hospital. She was awake and a little groggy and weak.

By her side were Rick, Kate, Tim, and Wilma.

At the other end of the room were Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur, and they were still dressed in their outfits from breaking into Dorreen's house.

Doctor Adams entered to room and was upset. "Why did you take off yesterday?"

Doctor Adams noticed Barney, Wilbur, Dorothy, and Edith, and stopped dead in her tracks. "I hope we're not being invaded and you're the ones to save the planet."

"No time to explain right now. Please help Amy," Wilma replied.

Doctor Adams walked up to Amy's bed and looked her over. She turned to Rick and Kate. "I want to medivac her to LA within the hour. I called the specialist, and he's waiting. So, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to fax him her blood test results," she said then walked to the door.

"I have security outside the door, so don't think about leaving again," Doctor Adams said then opened the door and left the room.

Amy motioned for Wilma to come over to her side.

Wilma walked over and leaned down to Amy.

"Finish it for me!" Amy said in a weak and low voice.

"I will," Wilma said then kissed Amy's forehead.

Wilma smiled then looked at friends. "Come on, gang. We better get out of here," she said.

Wilma, Barney, Wilbur, Dorothy, Edith, and Laurie all left the room.

Rick and Kate looked curious.

Randall walked over to Amy and gave her a quick peck on her cheek.

Amy motioned for Rick, Kate and Tim to come over while Randall rushed out of the room.

Amy motioned for Rick, Kate, and Tim to get closer. Amy kissed them all on their cheeks.

Kate and Rick all looked surprised with Amy's sudden mature behavior.

Thirty minutes later, a medivac helicopter waited on the West Valley Hospital heliport with its rear doors opened.

The pilots and flight nurse wheeled Amy on a gurney to the rear of the chopper.

They got Amy's gurney inside the back of the helicopter.

The flight nurse got inside the helicopter.

The pilots closed the doors and ran to the front of the helicopter and got inside.

The helicopter lifted off the roof of the hospital and ascended into the night sky.

Inside the medivac helicopter, Amy lay on the gurney with a look of pain on her face.

The flight nurse connected some monitoring equipment to Amy's body.

The flight nurse moved over and sat down in another seat.

Amy closed her eyes. "Lord, please forgive me for the way I've acted. I've learned my lesson, and if it's your wish to leave me old for the rest of my life, so be it," Amy silently prayed.

Tears flowed down her cheek from her closed eyes.
