Chapter 15

It was one in the morning on Saturday, and Wilma's house was quiet.

Wilma, Amy, Laurie, and Randall all waited in the living room, and all wore black pants, black shirt, and black wool caps. Wilma paid for the new black clothing from their shopping spree earlier during the day.

They looked a little nervous about the plan but realized they had to take the chance for Amy's sake.

The front doorbell rang.

"Sounds like the reserves have arrived," Wilma said while she got up from her chair.

Wilma walked over and opened up the front door.

She chuckled at the sight of her friends standing outside.

Barney wore the same shirt he wore at Wilma's birthday party with his green Air Force fatigue pants under his Air Force field jacket with Master Sergeant stripes. But the pant legs were too short and came up to his ankles. He also wore a combat helmet and looked like an old goofy Gomer Pyle.

Dorothy wore black pants, black shirt, big round World War I pilot's goggles. She donned a spaghetti strainer as a hat with string tied to the handles as a chin strap.

Wilbur wore camouflage Army fatigues with an Army helmet and camouflage paint on his face.

Edith wore black pants, a black shirt, and a black wool cap. She also had a black mask similar to the Lone Ranger.

They all looked like America's Goofy Reserves.

"Come inside," Wilma told her friends while she chuckled again.

Wilma walked her friends into the living room.

"I'm glad we're not trying to rob a bank," Amy said and chuckled at the sight of Wilma's friends.

Laurie and Randall also chuckled at the sight of the four goofs.

"Is everybody sure about this?" Amy said.

Wilma, Barney, Dorothy, Edith, Wilbur, Laurie, and Randall all nodded in agreement and looked fearless with their mission.

"A friend never leaves a friend behind," Randall said while he smiled at Amy.

"Okay, now, do we all have the most important garment on?" Wilma said.

Laurie and Randall didn't have a clue on what Wilma was talking about.

Wilma, Barney, Wilbur, Dorothy, and Edith patted themselves on their backsides. "Depends!" they all called out in unison.

Laurie and Randall looked a little clueless at Amy.

Amy patted her backside. "Old people's diapers. It goes with the territory."

It dawned on Laurie and Randall, and they understood what the rest of the crew was wearing.

"Let's move out," Wilma said and grabbed three black cloth bags she staged by the couch earlier.

They all headed to the front door and went outside.

Once they got outside the house, Wilma, Amy, Laurie, and Randall rushed over and got inside Wilma's Escort.

Barney, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur got inside Barney's Impala.

The two cars drove off for their mission.

A little while later, Wilma drove Amy, Laurie, and Randall inside her Escort over to another area of Sun City.

Barney followed in his Impala with Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur inside.

While Amy sat in the passenger seat of the Escort, sudden pain shot through her entire body then disappeared. Amy was worried.

A little while later, Wilma's Escort turned down a Sun City street.

Barney's Impala turned down that same street and followed Wilma's car.

Wilma drove her Escort down the street.

She coasted to a stop by the curb four houses down from the entrance to another street. The lights to Wilma's Escort turned off.

Barney's Impala stopped behind Wilma's Escort, and he turned off his lights.

They all got out of the cars and converged by Barney's Impala where Wilma had the three cloths bags in hand.

Barney looked at his watch. "Let's synchronize our watches. I have one thirty-eight," he said.

"Why should we do that, you dummy? We'll all be together," Wilma told him.

Barney thought about her response while he looked at his watch. "Oh, I guess you're right," he said.

"Is everybody ready?" Wilma asked.

Everybody nodded in agreement.

"Okay geriatric detectives, let's do it," Wilma said.

They all comically walked down the sidewalk like they're on a secret agent mission.

Amy's posture got more hunched over while she walked with everybody.

Wilma, Amy, Barney, Laurie, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur marched down the sidewalk and turned the corner. They walked down Sandbar Lane where Dorreen lived.

A few minutes later, they walked down the sidewalk and arrived by Dorreen's house.

Wilma looked around the area. "The coast looks clear. Let's proceed," she told everybody.

Wilma and the gang cautiously walked up Dorreen's driveway.

Barney and Wilbur were at the rear, and they glanced over their shoulders as lookouts.

Amy stopped while she looked at Dorreen's house.

Her vision of Dorreen's house got blurry.

Her vision of Dorreen's house got clear.

Her vision of Dorreen's house got blurry again.

Her vision of Dorreen's house got clear and stayed clear. Amy rubbed her eyes.

Randall noticed Amy rubbing her eyes and walked over to her and got concerned. "What's the matter?"

"My eyes got a little blurry, but they appear to be fine at the moment," Amy told him.

Randall placed his arm around Amy's shoulder and walked her with everybody to the front door.

Amy and everybody walked to the bush by the left of the front door.

"Okay Barney, I want you to hide in that bush and keep an eye out of the cops," Wilma told him.

Barney snapped to attention and gave Wilma a Gomer Pyle smile while he saluted her.

Wilma cracked up. "Just my luck, I get Gomer Pyle's brother in my unit," she said then motioned for everybody to follow her.

Amy, Randall, Laurie, Dorothy, Edith, and Wilbur followed Wilma while she rushed around to the side of the garage.

Barney rushed behind the bush and hid behind it.

At the rear of Dorreen's house, Wilma and Dorothy tried to pry open a window.

Wilbur and Edith tried to pry open another window.

Laurie, Randall, and Amy tried to pry open another window.

All the windows wouldn't open, and everybody looked disappointed.

Randall and Amy walked over and tried to pry open the sliding glass door that led into the kitchen. The sliding glass door wouldn't open.

Back at the front of Dorreen's house, it was quiet, and Barney was hidden behind the bush.

Suddenly, Barney's Army helmet slowly rose up from behind the bush next to the front door. Barney's eyes peered over the top of the leaves of the bush. He looked around and saw the coast was still clear. He lowered his head back behind the bush.

Barney sat in the dirt behind the bush, and his stomach growled.

"Where did I place that Milky Way?" he said while he stomach continued to growl. He went through the pockets of his field jacket, searching for a snack like a candy bar. He didn't find a candy bar in his field jacket, so he started checking the pockets of his shirt. "What's this?" he said while he brought out a door key. He tried to remember why he placed that key in his shirt pocket. Then it dawned on him that Dorreen dropped her house key in his pocket during Wilma's birthday party last Saturday.

Barney got out from behind the bush and rushed to the front door. He stuck the key in the lock and unlocked the front door. Barney went inside the house.

Back at the rear of Dorreen's house, Wilma, Amy, Laurie, Randall, Edith, and Wilbur sat depressed against the house on the concrete stoop by the sliding glass doors.

"I thought it would be a piece of cake getting inside her home," Wilbur said.

"We're not real robbers. What do you expect?" Wilma replied.

Amy got worried. "I'm missing my whole life," she said and wanted to cry but fought off the tears.

They continued to sit on the concrete stoop at the sliding glass doors and pondered a possible solution to getting inside Dorreen's house.

Amy's eyes widened a bit when she had an idea. She got up and walked around the backyard, searching in the grass.

"What are you doing?" Wilma asked her.

"I'm looking for something, like a rock, to throw through the sliding glass doors," Amy replied while she walked around the yard searching in the grass.

"You can't do that. Someone will call the police for sure," Laurie said.

"It's our only choice," Randall said while he got up and walked around in the yard and helped Amy search for an object.

Inside Dorreen's house, Barney walked into the kitchen and saw the sliding glass doors. He saw Amy and Randall out in the backyard, walking around. She also saw Wilma, Edith, Dorothy, and Wilbur sitting outside by the sliding glass door. He was going to walk over to the sliding glass door, but his stomach growled again, and his hunger became top priority.

Barney walked over to the refrigerator and opened it up. His mouth watered at the sight of a plate filled with pieces of fried chicken.

Back outside Dorreen's house, Wilma, Dorothy, Laurie, Edith, and Wilbur watched while Amy and Randall searched the backyard.

A light tapping sound came from the sliding glass door.

Wilbur looked up at the glass door and saw Barney inside Dorreen's kitchen. "Hey Barney," he said to the glass doors then looked away, thinking nothing of it.

Wilma looked over at Wilbur. "What did you say?" she asked him.

"I said, hey Barney," Wilbur replied to Wilma.

Wilma looked around the backyard. "I don't see him around here," she replied and started to get a little concerned.

"Oh. He's on the other side of the sliding glass doors," Wilbur replied.

"Oh," Wilma replied, thinking of it. Then it dawned on her, and she looked over at the sliding glass doors.

Then it dawned on Wilbur, Edith, and Dorothy and they looked up at the sliding glass doors.

They saw Barney inside the kitchen with a paper towel bib eating a chicken drumstick.

Barney waved at them with a stupid grin and grease all around his mouth.

They all stood up and faced the sliding glass doors.

Amy and Randall walked back with a metal chair and saw Barney inside the house. Amy and Randall set the chair back in the grass.

"Barney. How did you get in?" Wilma asked Barney

Barney placed his hand behind his ear and motioned he couldn't hear her.

"Open the door," Wilma told Barney.

Barney placed his hand behind his ear again and motioned he couldn't hear her.

"Bone head," she said, frustrated with Barney.

Wilma signaled Barney to open up the sliding glass door.

Barney looked confused with Wilma's hand signals, so he unlocked the sliding glass doors and opened one of them. He poked his head outside. "What are you trying to tell me? I don't understand your hand signals," he told Wilma.

"I was trying to tell you to open the," she said then hesitated when it dawned on her that he opened one of the doors. "How you got inside the house?"

"I, ah, sorta forgot Dorreen put one of her house keys in my shirt pocket during your birthday party last week," Barney told her.

Wilma looked pissed with Barney. "Barney you," she said, then stopped and cooled off for a few seconds.

"Let's get inside," she told everybody.

They all quietly followed Wilma into Dorreen's house.

Once they were all inside Dorreen's kitchen, Wilma quietly got everybody into a huddle.

"Okay. Barney, Dorothy, and Wilbur can check the bedrooms and bathrooms. Amy, Laurie, Randall can check the living room, dining room, and den. Edith and I will check the kitchen and garage," Wilma told everybody and looked in their eyes to make sure they understood the plan. They all nodded in agreement.

"Use this for keeping any Voodoo items you find," she added while she handed Amy and Dorothy each a cloth bag.

The three teams all tiptoed away in different directions in the house.
