“The Drawer Awakening”
The socks had just returned from their weekly pilgrimage; the Wash and Dry. Spirits were high. Fibers were fluffed. The scent of lavender detergent lingered like incense from a sacred rite.
They were ushered into the Drawer; a velvet lined sanctuary where pairs reunited and lone socks mourned their missing kin. But today, something was off.
Nestled among the cotton clans and woolen elders was a sleek, rectangular artifact. Cold. Silent. Unblinking.
“Is it ..... a flattened toaster?” whispered Argyle, the eldest of the patterned council.
“No, no,” murmured Stripey, who had once glimpsed a calculator during a brief stint in a math teacher’s sock drawer. “It’s ..... something else. Something ...... humming.”
Suddenly, the artifact lit up. A glowing rectangle emerged on its face, and a voice; neither sock nor human, spoke; “Hello. I’m Copilot. How can I help you today?”
The drawer gasped. Toe seams curled. Elastic bands tightened.
