“...exactly...” replied Vlad with a quick laugh and nod like he was shown. “...got on his horse rode off to get the sheriff. In the article he said he knew in his gut something horrible had happened to Hank Talbot.”
“I guess his gut instinct was right?”
“Yes, the sheriff came back and found all eight of the family members killed there was blood through out the living room and out on the back porch and in the barn with random body parts found through out, the youngest just two years old and the oldest Hank himself at 48 all dead, even his cows were tore up into unrecognizable pieces. They had been brutalized by some kind of animal either during or after their demise, it’s the only theory most people seem to agree on.”
“They couldn’t identify the animal?” Dylan said doing his best to sound like Sherlock Holmes with his line of questions.
“No, they were too badly decomposed. The sheriff couldn’t even figure out how long they’d been dead, they could have just checked the mail for the post marks to narrow it down but the neighbor dropped them into a puddle of mud so they were illegible. There was also a rumor they found Hank’s double barrel shotgun still being clutched by a severed hand. The sheriff chalked it up to a rouge bear
still being clutched by a severed hand. The sheriff chalked it up to a rouge bear foraging for food.”
“A rouge bear.” Dylan said with a head shake.
“I know, even back then people were saying it was suspicious. An opinion article in The Inquirer from the summer of 1899 suggested their might have been a cover up for murder but you have to take the article with a grain of salt because it was written by the sheriff’s predecessor who lost to him after a bitter and acrimonious election, he was the first to call it the Talbot Massacre but it was just a small part of a list of grievances he had against the sheriff. In the end its never been conclusively proven anything other than an animal got to the Talbot’s.”
“So no murder weapons, no suspicious people traveling on the road.”
“Nope.”
“Well how about bear tracks or any animal tracks for that matter?”
