ripped off his body, the snapping of bones sounded to him like a tree breaking in half from a wind storm. He hit the ground and was scrambling on his heels when the dark haired one appeared and bit off Max’s leg with one snap of its jaws.
The sight of their bloody snouts ripping away at his body made him vomit again though he was running now. He didn’t look back again, he ran and ignored the sound of their approach as he entered into deeper forest. Dylan was too panicked to think properly, going blindly forward into more thick bushes and tall trees praying he’d find his way out.
They things were close but he was getting his second wind and he felt his heart beat evening out. Dylan forgot about them and just ran without thought, without emotion, without anything except controlled breaths. He felt nothing but the air in his lungs until he saw the embankment that led back up to Franklin road. He let out a short and joyous cry as he began his climb up the dry rock encrusted hill face.
Though he didn’t falter on his climb upwards, the sound of approaching death was still near. Dylan looked up as he climbed and felt elation at the touch of the cold metal of the guardrail. He threw himself over it and spilled out onto the paved road where he was sure this nightmare would end.
The road was real, its rough tar surface was the reality. These things chasing him were not reality, his mind screamed, they were a bad monster movie come to life. His face was hot and his cheeks felt like they were on fire though they were damp with tears. He told himself this was all a dream but he could hear the panting of the hairy beasts getting louder as he laid on his back waiting, giving up.
Then there was a sound that filled him with a relief that made him moan. It was the buzz of Cord’s patrol car followed by a flash of red and blue light. The cruiser sat less than a dozen yards to Dylan’s left, the blinkers were flashing, lighting up the dark road like a slow moving strobe light. The light inside was on and he could see the deputy looking back at him as he buzzed his horn again.
Dylan was up and running once more just as he heard the claws of one of the werewolves scrape the metal of the rail. He didn’t look back and ran towards the deputy’s car where Cord sat watching intently. Does he see them, Dylan wondered but only for a brief second. He could hear them both on the road behind him but it was alright, he made it to the back passenger side door and got a firm hold on the handle despite his sweaty grip.
He had a nightmarish vision of the door being locked and the handle not budging, however it opened easily and he threw himself in the back and pulled the door shut. The sound of their claws clicking on the road as they ran rung in his ears worse then their filthy musky carpet smell stained his nose, all the foul sensations hit his senses making him want to vomit more but he held it down this time.
