Chapter 23: Planning Around Treatment — Timing, Scheduling, and Cost Considerations

Orthodontic treatment, across all three stages, is a multi-year commitment for most families, and thinking through the practical logistics early tends to make the experience considerably smoother.

Scheduling

• Interceptive and comprehensive treatment both require regular visits every four to eight weeks over an extended period — factor this into school and activity schedules well in advance.
• Many clinics offer appointment times around school hours; ask about this directly when planning a treatment start date.

General Cost Considerations

Orthodontic costs vary widely depending on the type of appliance, the complexity and length of treatment, and your specific location and provider. As a parent, it's reasonable to ask for a written treatment plan with an itemized cost breakdown, a clear description of what is and isn't included (such as retainers, emergency visits, or repairs), and information about any available payment plans, before committing to treatment.

• Ask whether the quoted cost includes the retention phase (retainers) or whether this is billed separately.
• Ask what happens, cost-wise, if treatment takes longer than initially estimated due to reduced cooperation or unexpected complications.
• If dental insurance is available to your family, check specifically what orthodontic coverage, if any, applies, and whether pre-authorization is needed before treatment begins.
