Chapter 22: Emotional and Social Considerations for Kids and Teens
Orthodontic appliances, whether a removable functional appliance, a fixed expander, or a full set of braces, arrive at an age when children and teenagers are often especially conscious of how they look and sound to peers. Supporting a child emotionally through this process is just as important as managing the clinical side.

Sports and Physical Activities
Children and teenagers in contact sports should wear a properly fitted mouthguard throughout orthodontic treatment. A general over-the-counter mouthguard may not fit well over braces; ask your orthodontist about mouthguards specifically designed to accommodate an appliance in progress.
