Chapter 15: Self-Ligating and Lingual Braces
Self-Ligating Braces
Self-ligating braces use a specialized bracket design with a built-in clip or door mechanism to hold the archwire in place, rather than the small elastic ties used with traditional braces. This can mean fewer adjustment visits for some patients and, for some, slightly more comfort, since there is less friction between the wire and bracket. They are available in both metal and ceramic versions.
Lingual (Hidden) Braces
Lingual braces are placed on the back (tongue-facing) surface of the teeth rather than the front, making them essentially invisible from the outside. They require more specialized training to place and adjust, and some patients experience a longer adjustment period for speech and tongue comfort compared to front-mounted braces. They are generally chosen by patients, often adults, who want a completely hidden option and are comfortable with this longer adjustment period.
