Chapter 14: Metal and Ceramic Braces
Metal Braces
Metal braces remain the most established orthodontic option, using metal brackets bonded to each tooth and connected by an archwire that gradually guides teeth into position. They tend to be the most cost-effective option and, thanks to modern smaller bracket designs, are considerably less bulky than older versions.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces work identically to metal braces but use tooth-colored or clear brackets, making them noticeably less visible, particularly from a distance. They are a popular choice for older children, teenagers, and adults who want the reliability of fixed braces with a less conspicuous appearance. Ceramic brackets are somewhat larger and slightly more fragile than metal ones, so care around biting hard foods is generally emphasized more strongly.
