Turnabout is fair play but
Things are getting far along. The seven along with Mary, George and Joyce now have been here for almost two years. The four are now settled into their new families. Of the pregnancies. There have been boys all the way.
Even those in town have had boys.
Now it has spread, probably all over this world of the miracle. It seems that their diminishing population problem is solved by the introduction of new blood. There is now hope.
Only one problem, Samuel wonders about the boys born. Will they continue to have only boys and then we are in the same position as we were when almost only females were being born.
I do not say anything because that will start the doubt. There are just some things that you need to leave to the gods. I do know that it was right to bring these now sons here. I can see it in the eyes of my daughters. I will keep my tongue and watch.
It is funny the way we dance to the music that our minds create. We can manufacture all sorts of negative problems in our minds. It is like we cannot allow good things to happen. We always feel that the rug will be pulled out from under us. We will fall to the ground, hit our head and die.
Don’t enjoy what you have or else.
Those thoughts invade my thoughts as my head hits my pillow. All I hear are those thoughts and my own heartbeat. Many a sleepless hour is spent on what the next disaster will we face and lose.
Fate is sometimes a wise guy. Ruth went into labor and as per usual, we men were chased out of the house. This now has become so frequent that I made a special house that we men can retreat to. The women are only allowed to knock on the door and ask us to come out.
Right! When Ruth finally delivered, Katrina came to get us. We opened the door and she backed away holding her nose. The look we got sent chills down all our spines. She slammed the door as she told us that we were to stay there.
“DON’T EVEN THINK OF COMING OUTSIDE!” is what she shouted.
Within minutes, the door was almost ripped off the hinges. There in the door was a group of mad humanoids the used to be our wives. They all had cleaning items. They all had that look of disgust.
Those cleaning items were almost thrown at us.
Atasha tells us that we need to open windows and clean up this outhouse. “You are to do this before you see that beautiful baby girl Ruth has given us. That is only after we approve and you all take a bath. You don’t want us even more upset then we already are. To think that you men are sitting in this shit hole waiting to see a baby.”
The door is again slammed. I swear that it sounded like they nailed a board across the door.
One thing that they did not figure out is that now Thomas is getting very powerful in magic. We both go to use magic but we hear a guttural growl come from a bearkin. They have left Sherry to make sure that we didn’t do what we were going to do.
“My father, I am not happy that I must babysit all you men rather than being with that baby. Our mothers told you to clean that men’s house before you come to see the newborn. That is to use your elbow grease not magic. Now clean it or I am instructed to get mother Atasha. You do not want to tear her away from her first granddaughter do you?”
We cleaned and we washed ourselves then put on new clothes. The room was cleared to let Thomas in first. Family time. Then we could come in a few at a time. His second wife, Peaches, brought in Ruths first son to see his sister. He seemed not to be interested
All in all, this put that crazy train of thought out of my mind. That and the smell of smoke. I went outside to see a group of women watching our men’s house burn. All seemed to be chanting, “fire purifies.”
It was decided by the men that we would just make a fire pit and some log seating.
After all the celebrations were done, things got back to normal. The hunts continue. Now we need to build up supplies. Fall is here and the need to build up the supplies for the cold two months.
The gardens are canned or put into cold storage. Meat is dried, smokes and such. Our growing family needs more. All the families now go out hunting.
It was during that time that a delegation of women from a distant village came with what turned out to be a grievance between Samuel’s clan and that village. I really had to laugh. I made the excuse that I needed to call in the hunts and I will let them present their grievance to the family.
All filed in but our four women gasped at who was there. They were the women that chased them out of the village after their husband died mysteriously. They quietly sat.
I ask the delegation to state their complaint to the body for their input. My family is looking at me and see that I am trying very hard not to laugh. They know that it is something outrageous.
“We have come here to retrieve village property. Those four women ran away without paying the remainder of what they owed. They are now considered runaway slaves. We demand that they be returned to us.”
She seemed really full of herself. Our four wanted to say something but I held up my hand. “You demand that I give you these four, my daughters. I will give you my answer. You need to go back to your village and inform them that in one weeks’ time we will come to your village. Be ready to fight. We will be fully armed. It will result in your entire village being annihilated. How dare you come with such a ridiculous claim.”
Now they see the anger in my eyes, “You came here and have declared war on my clan. We will meet you on the battle field. Now get off my land. We have a slaughter to plan.”
The delegation is now terrified. They now realize that they have stepped in a deep pile if shit.
Now Gretta stands. She looks at me, “These are the ones that chased us out. We did not runout. We were driven out after they stole everything we had. We were left to perish. If anyone deserves to be slaves, these greedy women need to be. We ask you to send a tattle bird to their chief. I would be willing to bet that she does not know they are here. Have them send someone to redeem them with whatever monetary compensation you feel will sate our offended clan.”
I do just that. I order that they be assigned to the lowest dirty duties and that the four of ours guard them to ensure that they don’t try to escape. You may use whatever force you consider necessary to make them comply. This matter is done. We wait that village chief’s reply.”
The toilets and such have been cleaned each day. At first, not to our standards. They were not used to such work. After a few days they broke. They were brought to me once again.
“That village will not be sending anything or anyone. We did just what they said we did. When we heard that you had accepted them into your clan, we figured that we could cash in. You would give us good trade for them. We are sorry, please let us go home.”
“Nope, I will not let you go. We will hear from them or they will see us. Now with that information, I will bring you to them. That will be with only half of the clan. That will be all we need to annihilate that village for ignoring my demands. As for you, I am going to find a new world to visit. I have had quite a few rejections. Ether they redeem you or I will place you on another world. You should not be allowed to pollute this world.”
We took the carriage and made it to that village. Standing on the edge, the high ground, facing the village, I call them out.
“I am Samuel, leader of my clan. You have not even replied to my message. You have snubbed me and my clan. I demand that you come out armed and ready to battle otherwise we will take it as an invitation to come in. There will not be one left alive.”
The chief comes out. “We told them that they were on their own if they went on with their scheme. We say that we are innocent of any wrong doing.”
I shoot an electric bolt at her feet. “Are they from your village?”
She answers a very timid and shaky yes.
“You just told me that you knew of their intentions but you never sent a tattle bird to warn us. Speaking of tattle birds, where is my bird? You never replied to it and don’t you say it never got here. I can feel it here. You are to release it now. “
She has another bring it out. Battered and much worse for the wear, they are to return to their owner and will try to, even to the point of death. They release it from the cage and all it can do is flop on the ground. It’s flight feathers were gone. Not broken, just gone.
Now I am really pissed but Faun comes over and clutches the bird to her and casts heal on it. The bird now lays there in her arms and passes. The feathers restored, it could go on to the final life without being bald.
Faun grieves as she says “Father, this whole village is guilty. I knew that this bird was hanging on only because it was plucked. It felt you were coming and hoped it would last until one of us would restore its feathers. You people are horrible. This bird was only a messenger. What were you going to do? Throw it into the stew pot live?”
She has a kind heart. We will talk when we get back. I know exactly what I am going to do. I have explored many worlds. I know where all of them are. Many too primitive to be of use for my family. I pronounce what I intend to do. I tell mine to release the women we held.
“Chief, I am returning these to you. My daughter is right. You should have stopped them. You should have answered my message to you. You let these go. You killed my bird. This village is condemned. You have no place on this world.”
With that, the whole population of this village is transported to one of those primitive worlds. Let them feel superior when they find that there is no magic there. They will need to work, to defend and lose their freedom. To become just fertile baby factories, slaves.
We get back into the coach and return home. Faun held that bird all the way. She buried it next to the mansion with a small stone that said “Rest now in your full plumage.”
