February, 1941. World War 2 has started five months ago and a ferocious battle for control of the North Atlantic between Germany and Great Britain is in full swing. Kapitanleutnant Otto Kretschmer, nicknamed 'The Tonnage King' by his fellow submariners, is recognized as the true Ace-of-Aces submarine commander. While relaxing on leave between two war patrols, he is summoned to the Paris headquarters of Admiral Karl Donitz, who then gives him command of a new, revolutionary submarine, the U-800.
