CHAPTER 28 – PAWN OR QUEEN
The battlefield wasn’t always blood and bullets.
Sometimes, it was smiles. Soft touches.
Whispers in the dark.
And tonight, Meera realized — she was standing in the middle of a different war.
A war of manipulation. A war where she couldn’t tell if she was the player or the piece.
It started with a letter. Slipped under the cracked door of their safehouse.
No name.
No scent.
Just a blood-red wax seal. Inside was a single line, scrawled in messy handwriting:
"You were never the queen, Meera. You were just another pawn in his game."
Her hands trembled.
The words felt like poison dripping into her veins.
Aarav was in the next room, bandaging his side from the last shootout. His shirt was soaked in blood, his jaw clenched in pain.
And yet…
Was it all real?
Or just another calculated move? Doubt, once a flicker in Meera’s mind, now roared like a wildfire. She replayed everything — The ‘chance’ meetings. The ‘accidental’ touches. The secrets he only ever half-told her. Was Aarav protecting her? Or controlling her?
That night, she didn't sleep. She sat by the window, staring out at the broken city, the stars hidden behind smog and betrayal.
And when Aarav sat beside her, pressing a kiss to her temple, whispering "I love you", her heart shattered quietly inside her chest.
Because for the first time, she didn't know if it was love she was feeling —
or the slow, exquisite death of it.
The Twist.
The next day, Meera decided to confront the darkness head-on. She broke into Aarav’s hidden files — the ones he had sworn never existed. And what she found made her blood run cold:
Her own photos — taken
long before they had even met.
Notes about her
weaknesses. Her fears.
A contract.
Her name at the top —
target: Meera Sharma.
He had been assigned to her. Before he ever "fell in love."
Meera stumbled back from the desk, bile rising in her throat. Aarav wasn’t just her savior. He was her hunter.
Her captor dressed up as her protector. And worst of all?
A small, traitorous part of her still loved him.
Still wanted him. Even after everything.
The Final Blow.
As she stood frozen, heart breaking into a thousand razors,
Aarav appeared in the doorway. Silent.
Deadly.
Beautiful.
Their eyes met — and for a moment, the world stopped.
No lies.
No masks.
Just two broken souls staring at the wreckage of what could have been. "You were never supposed to find that," he said hoarsely.
Meera clenched her fists, her voice a whisper.
"Am I your pawn or your queen, Aarav?"
His answer was a gunshot — not at her —
but at the enemy bursting through the window behind her.
Chaos exploded.
Screams.
Gunfire.
Shattered glass.
In the madness, Aarav grabbed her hand, dragging her through the back alleys, breathing hard. "You’re neither, Meera," he growled, blood dripping from his lip, "You’re the goddamn game itself. And I would burn the world to stay by your side."
In that moment, in the midst of violence and heartbreak,
Meera realized the truth: She wasn't the pawn.
She wasn't the queen.
She was the whole damn chessboard. And everyone was fighting just to survive on her terms.
