Chapter 28

As Eli walked out the door, he tucked the kitchen knife under his belt, near the small of his back. But, no sooner than his feet hit the pavement did he notice the dead strewn about the sidewalk. Given the gruesome act he had just committed, the sight of death didn’t bother him. In fact, it fascinated him to realize that at least a few of the deceased had probably suffered.

“Holy fuck,” he said. “What the hell happened here?” He walked from one body to the next, turning them over and examining their wounds. It seemed that the deeper the wound, the more intoxicated he became. He had never considered that he would be this close to so much death, and felt a morbid sense of arousal develop that left him slightly dizzy. However, the silence of death was suddenly broken by the faint sound of breathing and prompted Eli’s attention. At first, he wasn’t sure where it was coming from, but as he searched his surroundings, he noticed a slight movement from a woman lying in front of the entrance of a nearby store. Standing up, he studied the woman’s body closely, and again there was movement.

With a smile stretched across his face, he reached behind him and slid the kitchen knife out from under his belt as he walked slowly toward the ailing woman. After a moment of struggling, she turned on her side. A large woman, she had apparently kept her cell phone tucked in her bra when it exploded, and it was likely her ample girth that saved her from a fatal wound. Once on her back, she looked up at Eli and, with a strained voice, asked him for help. Looking down at her, he felt no sympathy, no urge to offer her the smallest degree of help. Instead, Eli felt contempt and as he stood over her, he took a few moments to contemplate a response. “Huh,” he began. “Looks like you’re hurt, doesn’t it?” He knelt down next to her, examining her wound more closely, and putting the knife on the sidewalk, grabbed her blouse with both hands and tore it open. Thus far, the tension created by the woman’s clothing had acted to slow the bleeding, but releasing it let loose a torrent of blood that sent a momentary stream just passed Eli’s head.

“Yeah,” he said. “That looks bad, alright.” His eyes became fixed on the gushing wound as his body began to relax. His mind became lost in the sight of so much blood and as the world around him faded away he was pulled back by the sound of the woman’s voice.

“Please do something” she said. “Please don’t let me die.” Eli considered her words and soon arrived at a solution. “Yes,” he began. “I will help you.”

Again, a smile made its way across his face. But it was one of kindness or compassion. Behind it lay the thoughts of a madman, someone who craved the sight of suffering and the sounds of pain and pleading.

He straddled her body at the waist and cruelly remarked on her size.

“Wow,” he began. “You are a big girl, aren’t you?” He giggled at her expense as she began crying. “Please help me,” she pleaded.

Eli picked the kitchen knife up and, looking at his reflection in its gleaming blade, agreed to help her.

“You know,” he began. “When I was a kid, my parents took me to church, every Sunday. What a bunch of bullshit. I’ve got to tell you, I didn’t believe a word of that shit. But, the one thing I do remember was that death is the ultimate form of healing. So, yes, I will help you.”

The woman’s face flushed as tears filled her eyes.

“Oh my God, please, no.”

Eli stared down at her body, wondering where to start. “Mmm, you know, I’ve never seen the inside of someone’s body before,” he said. “So, I guess now’s a good time for that, right?” The woman began screaming as he tore her clothes open, looking for a place to begin. Again, he remarked on her size. “Shit, have you ever thought of not eating so much? Jesus Christ.” She continued screaming, but Eli’s only reaction was a deep, twisted feeling of pleasure.

“Go ahead,” he began. “Scream all you want. No one’s going to hear you.”

His voice was quiet, almost kind. His intentions, however, were far from compassionate, and looking further down the woman’s body, he decided that he would begin his odd medical experiment as far down her body as possible.

“Now, don’t panic,” he began. “It’s not like I’m going to rape you or anything. I just want to see as much as possible.” Sliding down to her knees, he began loosening her jeans as she tried to fight him off.

Finally, with her body fully exposed he chose to begin a few inches below her navel, and using the point of the knife, picked at her skin while mocking her in what would be the final minutes of her life. “You feel that?” he asked. “Does that sting just a little?” The woman broke into a sweat as her breathing became quick and labored. Her mind was quickly drifting into shock at the realization that she was about to die in the most horrific manner imaginable. Then, in a moment of near psychotic pleasure, Eli suddenly drove the knife into her lower abdomen while watching her face, anticipating the pain and suffering that was quickly overtaking her. He smiled as her eyes widened, and her mouth stretched itself open in a silent scream. As he worked the knife upward, his hand became soaked with blood while her organs began spilling out. He looked at her face again, only to find that she was no longer sweating, and her skin had turned a yellowish pale. Her pain and suffering had vanished, leaving Eli angered that he was not able to create more. Leaning over into her face, he started screaming. “You’re fucking dead already?! God dammit!” Raising a fist, he struck her across the face, not to bring her back to consciousness but to express his rage at being deprived of what he wanted – to feed on her pain. But there was no response. “Fuck!” he screamed.

In a fit of rage, Eli raised the knife over his head and began stabbing the woman’s body, over and over again, cursing loudly in resentment. The monster would not allow him to stop, but as in the murdering of his father, the only that slowed his assault was exhaustion.

Climbing off the woman’s body, Eli fell back against a nearby storefront and as he tried to catch his breath he noticed that not only was he fully aroused but wet as well. “Shit!” he said. “I had no idea this was so much fun!” Surveying the street, he looked for a clothing store where he might be able to get clean pants and underwear. However, it would not be long before he would be out in search of more lives to steal, killing for the fun of killing.
