Buchan's hero, a Scottish grocer, teams up with a poet to investigate a house inhabited by two women, one of whom may be a princess in distress. Set in Scotland, it follows the adventures of Dickson McCunn, a newly retired grocer planning a modest walking holiday in the hills of south-west Scotland, where he meets John Heritage, a young English poet. However, their peaceful, idyllic ramblings soon turn into adventure, when they discover that two woman are being held captive at a local mansion - one of them a Russian princess.
