#1. Why Women Are Most Affected by Obesity

What is the percentage of obese women compared to the percentage of obese men? Generally, this percentage is slightly higher. This is because the body of a woman is different compared to the body of a man. Under normal circumstances, women have 25% more fat compared to men. On the other hand, the fact is that women do most of the household chores from washing clothes to cooking and shopping. This helps them remain more active. Their fat breaks down faster than the fat in men and this contributes toward a leaner body.

However, women still remain at the same level of risk, when it comes to obesity. After childbirth women tend to gain more fat and become fatter than men. This is quite natural because even after the baby is born, a woman’s food intake is not reduced immediately. Still, with the baby being born, the woman is once again on her feet attending to the daily chores, like before.

Despite this, with no further medical attention being given to the woman in the prime of her life, she slowly starts accumulating fat all over her body. However, unless there is a serious problem, women do not tend to become naturally obese with the passing of time. Female hormones from time to time tend to play a role in weight gain, but it is insignificant, unless the hormonal imbalance is serious.

Distorted estrogen levels and the regulation of other hormones may be significant contributors to obesity too. Other important weight gain contributors are the consumption of alcohol and smoking of cigarette. These are significant obesity contributors and can have a serious negative effect on the overall health of women.

Given their specific anatomy, there has to be a specific comprehensive weight loss program for women. Yoga provides an excellent method for preventing the fat accumulation in the body. Aerobic exercises and swimming are also considered equally good fat busters. As long as working out is done at regular time intervals it will have a superb effect on the overall health of the woman.

What is needed to prevent obesity is a massive campaign that can spread the word around effectively. One must understand that consuming plenty of fried foods at one point in time can have disastrous results in the future. Oil, irrespective of the state and the form it comes in, is still oil. If such facts can be kept in mind, a significant step can be taken in eradicating obesity.

#2. Why Diets often do not Work

Obesity is the leading health concern in the world. Regrettably, people are trying in vain to lay their hands on a perfect diet plan that will work in helping them shed the extra body weight. Each day a new diet plan emerges on the market, but it doesn't end up working for all.

Each individual is different and has different requirements, so it is best that we follow a customized diet plan that is designed based on our age, gender and health problems. This is the only way in which we can adopt a perfect diet plan that matches our individual needs.

The real problem is that all diet plans do not work for all. Usually diet plans fail because when people follow a diet plan, they actually eat in way that is not natural for them in general. This creates physiological and psychological problems.

Research shows that when people diet, they end up gaining more weight. Diets usually fail because they make the obese person feel hungry and depressed. When your calorie count is cut, you are sure to feel hungry. This results in hunger pangs and cravings. You may be trying to avoid foods that are high in sugar and fat, but you feel like you cannot resist these. The human mind reacts badly to restricted food intake and to forbidden foods and so you end up eating more and unhealthier foods. Your metabolism also gets damaged due to continuous dieting. The slowing of metabolism may result in weight gain and even in more serious health issues.

At times the diets don’t work because obesity may be a result from the intake of certain medications that you may be using for treatment pattern. Some people suffer from obesity due to a medical problem. That is why it’s best for you to get a medical examination that can show what the actual cause of your obesity is. Finding the causes is the best way to deal with the problem. You will be able to follow a specifically designed healthy diet plan, only after understanding the root cause of your obesity.

Some people turn obese because they are emotional eaters. Once they feel depressed, they end up overeating and thus gain weight. As diets don’t address the emotional factors that lead to overeating, they fail to produce results. Another reason why diets often fail is because they are standardized. They do not meet the individual's nutritional needs that can help for the balancing of their emotional state.

In general, diets fail because they are not designed to suit the specific individual. This is in fact the issue that affects dieters all over the globe. Their diet plans don’t work for reducing their body weight. Even though they think they are losing weight by eating less and following strenuous exercises, all is in vain.

All diets are standardized and they don’t consider your individual physiology and metabolism. They actually adopt a cookie cutter approach, which may not be suitable for you. If this is the case, the diet plan fails to help you lose weight.

The dieters never stop dieting and this helps the dieting industry make huge profits. They try to make people believe that being thin is equal to success, but this is definitely not the case. At times, the average dieter is not overweight, but still needs to reduce a little weight, so he/she always keep dieting.

If you really want to lose weight, it is essential that you follow the experts' advice. These professionals are educated enough to guide you to a perfect diet plan that will work for your particular body physiology and will help you maintain your body weight all the time.

It is important for you to choose a specific diet plan that is right for you. Research all your options and compare them to one another. In this way, you can get the best diet plan that will work for reducing your obesity, as you get the chance to compare the different features of the different options. You can readily look at the foods that you should eat and how often you should eat to make up your mind. In this way, you will end up with a perfect diet plan that suits your individual needs and works in your favor to help you lose weight.

#3. When to See the Doctor about Weight Gain

It is not typical for doctors to suggest contacting them in case a weight problem arises. If it were, this would have caused a general sense of fear among the population since the majority of people do not have the perfect body weight, to say the least. Of course it takes a pinch of common sense to decide if you need to see your GP. Still, just in case, here are some of the cases when it is necessary to visit your doctor:

• The first reason for seeing your doctor is when you mysteriously gain weight, given that your eating habits or routine training have not changed drastically. There may be other symptoms including exhaustion and weakness. If this is the case, you should probably arrange to visit your GP.

• In case you are quite above the average body weight (over 30 BMI, for example) it is a must for you to visit your doctor. He will most likely prescribe you a change of lifestyle, usually a special eating regime and exercise. You may also be referred to a weight control specialist or a local fitness club. It is a common practice for obese patients to be prescribed a daily sports agenda at some of the local swimming pools or sport halls.

• Obese people are more prone to health problems. This is the main reason why they should consider visiting their GP. Many of us have tried to solve the problem by ourselves, but this usually leads nowhere or backfires. So, visiting your general practitioner may assist you in coping with this issue.

• It is also possible for you to have an eating disorder. In this case, it is mandatory that you visit your doctor.

• If you are planning to become a mom in near future, visiting you doctor is a must, if you are prone to weight gain.

Many general practitioners are not as compassionate as they should be with obese people. Yet a few minutes of informative consultation with an overweight patient may produce amazing results. At the same time, this short lecture can provide people with motivation to have a healthier lifestyle. There is also a possibility that you need no physician at all and that your problem might get fixed with a few visits to a weight loss club to shed a few pounds or so.  Give it a try you have to lose but weight!

#4. What Causes Obesity

Obesity is a condition in which the body weight exceeds the maximum normal weight for a given age and height. It is associated with other challenges, such as social stigma and weight related illnesses, such as hypertension, heart disease or gout.

Here are some causes of obesity and information to aid in preventing it. There are strategies for achieving weight loss in a relatively short period of time. First and foremost, we need to understand that obesity can either develop because of lifestyle factors or hereditary factors. In the case of the latter cause, the ability to control the condition may be limited. This is often the case where you find a family of overweight individuals.

There could be a gene that makes them able to efficiently convert food substrate into glucose, but makes their metabolism poor. This leads to excess glucose storage and, therefore, an increase in body fat. The good thing about having knowledge of such family factors is that you can do something to control them. It is often said we only need to fear that which we do not know. Once you know that your family is exposed to the risk of obesity then you need to choose a lifestyle that will minimize weight gain.

Lifestyle factors that cause obesity are largely related to food or eating habits. Food nutrients are categorized as carbohydrates, fats, protein, minerals and vitamins. Carbohydrates and fats are important sources of energy. However, if they are taken in excess to what the body needs, this will result in excessive storage of the extra glucose in the adipose tissues.

These tissues are the linings that surround body organs such as the skin, heart, liver, kidneys and so forth. Foods that are rich in processed fats, such as French fries and foods rich in simple sugars (presented in already digestible forms) such as chocolate are even worse. These are foods that you must avoid.

Therefore, strategies for weight loss should be based on the factors discussed above. Find out if you are predisposed to obesity because of genetic composition. Next is to avoid foods that are likely to give you more calories than you are able to burn. It is important that you avoid a sedentary lifestyle.

Take the stairs instead of the lift. Spare some time to jog at least twice a week. Also, avoid stress by taking breaks from work and taking only tasks that you can manage.

#5. Understanding Obesity and Weight Loss

A clear study of statistics from The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the US shows that out of the total population in the country today close to 73% of people fall under the category "obese" in one way or the other. Obesity is defined as being grossly overweight with a body mass index greater than the overall mass.

That said, it is now necessary to understand the causes of the massive obesity that the US is burdened with. What is actually happening is this - with more and more machines and electronics coming in to rule the lives of human beings, there is less need to be physically active and to do the manual work on your own. For instance, a person living on the 64th floor of an apartment building would never even think of using the stairs, since there are speedy plush elevators to do the job effortlessly for him. Machines are making people lazier and lethargic by the day and the end result is devastating.

If these figures are to be further examined, you will get some of the most startling facts found so far. It cannot be easily believed that one out of every three children in the US is overweight. The reduction in the outdoor games and the welcoming of the internet, the video games and the high tech gadgets are all factors responsible for the urge to stay on the sofa and be a couch potato right from the early years of one’s life. This coupled with unhealthy eating habits and the consumption of junk foods and soft drinks has been taking a massive toll in health. Children are no longer attracted to running outdoors. Still, a ninety-minute game of soccer once a week would help set everything right and the children would be able to see for themselves the beneficial change in their bodies.

While obesity is being currently measured through the BMI (Body Mass Index), it is now an accepted fact that the BMI calculator is not wholly accurate. The BMI of a person with height more than 6’ may not give the true percentile, unless you try to measure him physically. Honestly, that would be quite unnecessary. With BMI or without BMI, the fact remains that the country is in danger of an obesity epidemic. This is a serious condition and unless immediately treated, it would have widespread ramifications on the entire population and the economy of the country.

#6. The Surgical Solution to Obesity

For those who are looking for a way out of the pot belly situation, there is a ray of hope from the medical field. There is one surgery that can be performed now and that can actually help you in reducing your food intake. In this way, your unhealthy eating habits can be immediately curtailed. What the surgeon does while you are under complete body anesthesia, is to open the stomach, snip the end off and tie it up, so that the stomach size is reduced. In turn, the craving for food will be less.

This has proved to work for many obese people around the world. That is why this surgery is being highly sought after. Various hospitals are specializing in this sort of surgery and are admitting patients by the numbers, so that each of them can have a better chance to live longer without health complications related to obesity.

While this is all right from the weight loss standpoint, it must be clearly understood that surgery is in no way the ultimate solution. You will have to stick to a regular routine of exercise as well. If early morning exercise is impossible for you due to your hours of work, you can always plan your workouts in the evening and at the weekend. The fact is that you will have to exercise a lot to stay fit after the surgery.

Human body muscles are designed in such a specific manner. If they remain idle for a certain amount of time, they are likely to get lethargic and create a number of problems for you. Obesity is one of them. Obesity is nothing that comes from the outside. It is very much created by the person who has it.

Food intake is also to blame for obesity. The faster you swallow your food without chewing it, the bigger the risk of getting obese is. This is because the food will undergo only a small breaking up in the stomach. This is the beginning of weight gain and obesity.

If you have obesity, you will find numerous shops selling you weigh loss pills as well. Similarly, there are a lot of weight loss centers. You may find one of those facilities that will actually guide you to get leaner, but again, do not go in for any program that promises you weight loss in no time. Surgery combined with the age old custom of exercising is just about enough to keep obesity at bay and weight under control.

#7. Technology and Weight Loss Management

Obesity and weight loss are the main topics on many of the most visited websites. This is because these are problems not only in developed countries, but in the quickly developing countries as well. Given that obesity is a problem that is not easy to fix, it has stretched the imagination of scientists to try and find more advanced solutions. These are solutions that are designed to reduce obesity and to produce success in weight loss. However, technological advances have played a double edged sword role in both advancing and limiting obesity and weight loss programs.

There are instances when technology has increased the probability of becoming obese due to promotion of lifestyle that is sedentary and associated with poor eating habits. Take the cell phone, for example. While it is a technology that is revolutionizing communication, it has improved efficiency in communication to the extent of reducing the need to travel. One can now order goods and foods, perform banking transactions, send letters and have a video conferencing without leaving the room or even the desk. All these encourage sedentary lifestyle, which promotes being weight gain and obesity.

The same internet-based technology that enables all of the above functions to occur has worked in favor of management of obesity and weight loss. A good example is the Childhood Overweight Bio-Repository Center in Australia. It has begun collecting data on children, both anthropometric and clinical.

This information is used to predict the probability of a child developing obesity allowing early prevention or adequate management measures to be taken. Parents post the data online using internet technology. Epigenetic information, posted on internet after blood tests are done, also helps in predicting the probability of a child developing obesity. It also gives an ideal about the nutritional management required.

Internet technology has also been used by the emerging ‘behavioral economics’ to leverage consumer psychology and make it easier to eat less. For example, major restaurants can place a discussion on healthy foods at forum on Facebook or Twitter. In this way, they are encouraging people to order certain foods. Healthier food items placed on feature pages of major newspapers almost immediately increase the chances of such foods being ordered in restaurants.

If it were not for the internet, it would have been impossible for such information to reach huge audiences and change perceptions on good eating habits in a short period of time.

Generally, the fact that it is easier to get information on better obesity management and weight loss is one great benefit of advancing technology. This should be embraced and made more easily available to those seeking to manage obesity.

##8. Taking the Doctor’s Advice on Obesity and Weight Loss

As the malady and the remedy for the malady, obesity and weight loss are related. Obesity means excessive weight gain. Thankfully, there are innumerable ways to lose weight through various weight loss programs. These days there are several weight loss professional services available from diet centers and cosmetic cure centers that are advertised to be effective. These centers go the extra mile in showingcasing their clients who have begun to fight obesity and have accomplished positive results. The effectiveness and the length of time the effects of these remedies last for are things that still remain a matter of debate. But at least someone somewhere has taken note of the burning issue of the day and has decided to make some money out of it.

A structured weight loss program under a doctor’s care would include several stages and factors. It starts with taking the measurement of the individual’s weight. His or her history of diseases suffered, if any, is taken into account as well. The food habits of the individual are also noted in detail. The foods the person eats are also examined to estimate the amount of calories he is consuming every day. The excessive intake of calories is the single most important contributor to weight gain and obesity.

These factors are discussed at length by the individual and his dietician and doctor. The emphasis is on how to cut down the calorie intake as much as possible. Dieticians and doctors do not generally allow the individual suffering from obesity to put his or her food priorities first. They have their own tailored solutions that they willingly present to their patients. There are subtle changes made here or there to accommodate some of the individual needs of the patient. The patient is put on a regular exercise program, which has shown to be highly effective when done religiously on a daily basis.

Still, the doctor knows how to influence and motivate the patient to move forward. Having put the alarms and the threats in place, the doctor asks the patient to report back in a month’s time so that he knows the patient’s progress. The patient has the motivation now to prove that he has been following the doctor’s advice to the T.

Unfortunately, not all patients actually take their doctor’s advice seriously enough to see the results in a few months. However, exercising and dieting are the best methods for weight loss, so it is essential for them to be taken seriously.

#9. Regain Your Life in Spite of Obesity

In today’s world, looks are everything. In fact, it is said that we often see ourselves through the eyes of others. The good news is that this is not always factual; it is usually just a perception. Therefore even when you are struggling with obesity, or being overweight, that need not take away all your joy. Obesity is not the end of the world. It is, in fact, a source of motivation to learn to be yourself and to be happy with your life. In the process, you can learn some good tricks for weight loss that can help you shed pounds effectively and quickly.

There are many articles on the internet and in magazines telling you how to cut down your weight in a few days, but many of them make you feel totally miserable. You need not feel guilty about being obese. This article will focus on how to retain or regain self-esteem when faced with obesity. This is often the most important element that is required to manage obesity and achieve weight loss.

The rationale behind self-esteem as an essential element for weight loss and is based on psychological studies. These prove a relationship between the brain and muscle development. What you think of yourself or of a situation will trigger the production of specific hormones and enzymes. These either increase the conversion of glucose into glycogen (fat) under the adipose tissues (the skin) or break down the fats under the skin and around other tissues and convert it into glucose for production of energy. Therefore it is important for you to think of yourself positively when you are obese. Do not think it’s the end of the world.

Therefore a precursor to having effective weight loss to manage obesity is to feel good about yourself. Dress up in clothes that fit you and make your weight look appealing. This will give you the confidence to walk in the streets and go to the gym and experience weight loss fast!

Make jokes about your weight. Do not sit there and wait for others to make fun of your weight. This is the only way you avoid sulking and getting into a bad mood. After all, anyone can become obese. In some instances, it is genetic as it runs in your family and you are not to blame, period!

Cheer up. It is the first medication for dealing with obesity and having successful weight loss.

#10. Preventing Obesity in Children

Obesity has become a worldwide problem, especially in children. Pediatricians and researchers have identified various obesity related diseases in children, like diabetes and high blood pressure, which were once considered adult diseases. We need to understand the basic causes of this problem and adopt preventive measures that can help eradicate it from our children’s life.

It is known that obesity can be a result from different factors, ranging from lifestyle to genetics. Still, it usually occurs when children start to consume more calories than required by their body. The extra calories are accumulated as fat in the body, increasing the body weight and causing harmful health effects in the affected individual’s life.

It looks as if obesity has spread like an epidemic among children. The main problem seems to be that youngsters are indulging in unhealthy eating habits and leading a sedentary lifestyle, which makes them inactive. Children become obese with no physical activity in their life that can help them burn the extra calories.

Something effective needs to be done to prevent obesity in children. Steps should be taken to reverse this trend and prevent it from becoming an even more widespread problem. We are shortening the life span of our children by just sitting back and allowing them to become obese. Recognition of the factors that lead to obesity in children will help you prevent or eradicate it from the lives of your children forever. We should learn to draw the line between what is healthy and what is obese as this is the only way we can maintain a healthy balance in the life of our kids.

At times, it is parents who stuff their children with excess food thinking that they are in a growing stage and need more food. However, the real fact is that the energy expenditure that is needed for a healthy growth is only about 2 % of the daily energy expenditure. So, keeping this in mind we should try to determine the exact amount of food that children require, so that they can be healthy and active and not obese. Forcing your children to eat beyond their natural needs will teach them to overeat from a very young age. This will certainly have disastrous complications.

At times parents also try to force diets on their children that are too low in calories. This is also not healthy for them as the children need a specific amount of calories for their growth and restricting the calorie intake will surely hinder their growth. So it is important that they should be given the essential calories that are required for healthy living. If the children have been overeating before the cut down in calories to normal levels, this will initiate weight loss.

Another reason for the development of obesity in children is the lack of physical activity in their life. Most of the time, children sit down on the couch watching television or playing video games and so they end up being overweight and obese because of this . Awareness of the dangers of sedentary lifestyle must be created in children to make them more physically active, so that they can live a healthy and active life.

Organizing games that involve physical activity will certainly help your children immensely as well. Involving your kids in your household chores helps them burn more calories and become healthy and active.

Genetics also plays an important role in your children's life and may be related to obesity. If there is a tendency in your family for its members to become obese, the chances are that your child is also at risk of becoming obese. Hence, you should start to educate him on the causes of weight gain and make him understand the basic ways that can help him stay active and healthy from a very early age.

You should also have a heart to heart conversation with your kids and try to uncover their emotional state, as there are many kids who start overeating when they feel depressed.

The bottom line is that if we don’t step forward and make our children adopt healthy eating habits and limit their intake of junk food, we will end up with a life threatening epidemic that will reach disastrous dimensions.

#11. One Solution to Obesity

The functionality of the neighborhood gym for taking care of obesity cannot be overemphasized. It is widely accepted today that unguided exercises are less effective and more likely to cause injuries and a lot of physical pain. This puts off many people from exercising.

People become obese when they have stopped exercising and being physically active or if they have never exercised at all in their lives. The physiology of the body is good enough to accept small unease in the form of a rich feast or a grand party once in a while. However, when there is lack of exercise and a calorie-rich diet, at one point in time the body gets out of shape, muscles become lifeless and fat cells start multiplying rapidly. This causes obesity and the person sees significant physical changes which he or she would definitely not like to see. Here the functionality of the gym comes in.

A gym is a training place that provides for typical exercising and physical activities under the supervision of an expert trainer. The place has a number of machines and equipment that can help in the training process. A membership in one of the gyms that suit you is highly recommended, as it will propel you to visit the gym at a specified time to do your bit of working out for the sake of your body.

If the body is taken care of, half the illnesses including obesity, disappear. With no physical problems and illnesses, mental stress and agony also disappear. The person becomes active and volunteers to do most of the things around the house himself. The main benefit of going to a gym is that you get the chance to build your body under the supervision of an expert.

You know that you can do wonders with your body now. It was all fat and flabby before. Now you see rippling muscles showing under your shirt that improve your looks. This does a world of good to your self-esteem too. Most important of all, you keep virtually every known health threat and disease at bay.

If you want to cut down on gym fees, never think of installing some of the machines at home. This would mean spending a fortune for no good reason. Moreover, there would be less use of the machines and ultimately they would gather dust. Going to the gym means that you are keeping obesity off and making new friends.

#12. Obesity Dos and Don’ts

When you are obese, then the last thing you want to do is engage in behavior that may increase your weight by even an ounce. It feels bad to know that your weight is greater than the last time you stepped on the scale. There are rules that you must follow to avoid gaining weight. You need to have utmost discipline to be able to manage obesity through effective weight loss. There are dos and don’ts as discussed below:

Dos

1. Exercise: this is the key to effective obesity management. You will not and cannot achieve weight loss unless you burn more calories than you gain. The body works to convert every particle of food into glucose, protein, fat, amino acids, fatty acid, vitamin or mineral. Glucose is often given a preferential treatment when it comes to absorption by the body. Therefore if you fail to exercise, you are likely to gain much weight within a short time. For those who have problems with metabolism, this can happen very easily even when they do not eat much food.

2. Eat regularly: The human body has a time clock that functions based on previous experience. That is why you will find it a challenge to adjust whenever you travel across continents. As long as you eat normally all the time, you will feel good.

3. Fruits and vegetables are recommended: these not only add color to your table. They play a vital role in weight loss. They improve bowel function and limit the possibility of harmful bacteria contributing to production of toxic by-products. These include fermentation by-products which increase the sugar levels and, in turn, increase weight.

4. Have enough sleep: It is recommended that an adult should have at least 8 hours of sleep. This is important as it reduces stress levels in the body preventing chances of stress-induced weight gain. Those who have enough sleep have lower chances of becoming obese.

5. Avoid stress: whatever causes your blood pressure to rise should be avoided. This is because stress causes the rise of certain hormones such as serotonin which affect metabolism.

Don’t

1. Sleep more than 8 hours per day: while sleep was reported as being good as it reduces stress, it is also not good to have too much sleep. Too much can be defined as over 8 hours of sleep. Oversleeping will result in a sedentary lifestyle which lowers the chances of weight loss.

2. Eat French fries and candies: this is simply a prohibition! These will wipe away any accomplishments in obesity management and so must be controlled at all costs.

#13. Obesity and Pregnancy

Heard of the saying that someone is ‘as slim as a bride’? This is because most married women gain weight when they become pregnant. The slim bride image would be gone by the time the first pregnancy and delivery comes through. Sadly, in many cases the mother gains so much weight that she becomes obese.

There are many factors that may contribute to such pregnancy related obesity. First, the mother is feeding another human being. For every meal that she takes, she eats an extra portion for the baby in the womb. This happens naturally given the increased frequency of hunger pangs. In addition, cravings associated with certain foods, which may be junk food, often contribute to weight gain during pregnancy.

The following are some dos and don’ts which will help manage weight gain and avoid developing obesity:

Dos:

1. Eat more fruits and vegetables: these provide the body with nutrients that help the digestion of foods. They prevent excessive intake of carbohydrates if taken 30 minutes before a meal. They also boost immunity and metabolism and thus, prevent excess deposits of fats.

2. Have light exercises and seek advice from your doctor: intense exercises would be dangerous to your unborn baby. This is especially the case in the first trimester (the first 3 months) of the pregnancy. Therefore you should only have light jogs or walks in the park. Swimming is allowed to an extent.

3. See your doctor regularly: regular visits to the doctor will allow you to have your weight checked and be monitored for other factors such as high blood pressure and abnormal blood sugar levels. These have a relationship to obesity.

4. Sleep at least 8 hours: sleep is important; it leaves the body with little stress and helps in weight loss and preventing obesity.

Don’ts

1. Do not smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol: this is not only important in avoiding obesity, but it is also important for the health of the baby.

2. Do not watch too much TV: this is a sedentary life, which does not encourage weight loss and can easily lead to pregnancy-associated obesity.

3. Do not eat junk foods: these are often rich in fats or sugar. These are likely to lead to weight gain and obesity.

4. Avoid stress: jobs or spouses that cause stress should be avoided as it sends the wrong signal to the hormones. Activities such as long distance driving should be avoided.

#14. Obesity and Osteoarthritis

Being obese is the most common cause of osteoarthritis and pain in the joints. In other words, the heavier your weight, the more susceptible you are to such health problems. Of course, osteoarthritis is more common among the elderly. Still, being overweight can greatly reduce the age at which you might develop this disease.

Osteoarthritis is caused by the wearing out of the substance between the joints which is called cartilage. Once it is no longer there, the bones start rubbing against one another thus causing a great amount of pain. Just think about the pain in your wrists, knees and your spine.

It is only natural to conclude that the heavier we are, the more loaded our joints are. Being overweight, however, does not harm your joints only mechanically. According to research the abdominal fat produces chemicals that may cause joint inflammation.

Contemporary life seems to do its best to serve osteoarthritis. The sedentary lifestyle affects mostly the lumbar region of the back, as it is the one body area that undergoes the greatest pressure. Factors such as ageing, sitting all day long in the office in that uncomfortable chair and bending over the computer for hours are enough to cause you back pain. Just think about adding obesity to the picture.

The lumbar region (the lower area of your spine) consists of five lumbar vertebrae, which are separated by five intervertebral discs. These discs help the bones remain a little bit apart, not allowing them to rub against one another and basically act like shock absorbers. What they actually do is to absorb the weight of the body and its muscles and ligaments.

Another one of the discs’ functions is to allow movement in the waist. It permits the spine to bend or twist. As you may guess, the lack of movement and sedentary way of life often cause the muscles to weaken. Of course, this is one of the problems of contemporary life and especially of white collar jobs. Adding obesity to the equation does not help your body cope with these issues. It is quite the opposite.

So the advice is to exercise more. This would prevent or lessen the pain in the back and joints and help you lose weight. Of course, being obese obstructs exercising, but there are a number of ways to strengthen your muscles without straining them. Swimming and walking are only some of the possibilities.

#16. Medical Conditions that can Cause Obesity

Obesity is not something that occurs overnight. People start to gain weight due to overeating, poor diet and lack of physical exercise over a long period of time. Still, there are certain medical causes that lead to obesity. Some medical conditions trigger obesity without the person changing their diet and lifestyle habits.

So it’s best for people who are suffering from obesity to take it seriously. It is necessary for them to get a physical examination and have tests for diagnosing or refuting the presence of a disease that may be the possible causes of obesity. Medical experts know that weight gain can be a result from certain body disorders and diseases that makes it difficult for the individual not to gain weight. Still, there are also certain genetic factors that may lead to obesity in combination with a disease.

There are many medical conditions that can cause obesity in people. These are:

Cushing’s syndrome:

This medical condition is caused by an increase in the levels of Cortisol, a steroid hormone. People suffering from Cushing’s syndrome gain weight particularly in the upper back and lower back. Their face is also affected.

This condition occurs when excess Cortisol is secreted in the body, because of dysfunction of the adrenal glands or because of taking a Glucocorticoid medication. This condition can also be caused by tumors that increase the secretion of this specific hormone.

Hypothyroidism:

Hypothyroidism slows down the metabolic rate of an individual. This condition occurs in patients whose thyroid gland is underactive and has decreased hormone production. This causes obesity in nearly all cases, as fat is stored in the body instead of being used up in the form of energy. Patients that suffer from severe Hypothyroidism are much more likely to suffer from obesity than others. Apart from gaining weight, they get a bloated appearance, especially in the face area and in the area around their eyes.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome:

Women, who suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome, end up with increased secretion of the male hormone Androgen. In turn the production of eggs in the ovaries is affected and they develop into cysts. This causes irregular menstrual cycles in females. This may also cause obesity. If this condition is left untreated, it can also lead to infertility and many other medical complications.

Insulin Resistance:

People with high insulin levels gain weight very fast. This happens because the body cells don’t respond to the hormone insulin that helps to maintain optimal blood glucose levels. To treat the problem of reduced insulin sensitivity and increased levels of blood glucose, the patient needs to take the proper medications. Otherwise the condition makes the individual gain weight and he starts becoming obese. As patients start gaining weight, other body hormones also start to malfunction to some extent. This can make the primary health problem even more serious.

Prade Willi Syndrome:

People suffering from Prade Willi Syndrome have an insatiable appetite. If their food intake is not controlled, they end up being obese. Prade Willi syndrome is actually a rare genetic disorder. It occurs when about seven genes of the individual are deleted or not expressed properly. This triggers other health problems, apart from obesity. Sometimes obesity gets so extreme that patients end up in life threatening situations.

Psychological Factors:

Emotions and feeling affect the eating habits of individuals. Many people start to eat excessively in response to depression and/or persistent anxiety. They end up eating more than they should. They gain weight and become obese.

Medications:

There are various types of medications that people take for some physical or mental problem in their life. Some of these medications have chemicals that may cause the patient to gain weight. For instance, you might take medications that stimulate you to eat more than you need. That is why it is always best to use only medications prescribed by doctors, as they know best which medication will suit you and have the least side effect. Your doctor will avoid prescribing medicines that can cause harmful effects.

These are the main medical conditions that can cause obesity. If you have one of them, you should try to adopt good eating habits and a healthy lifestyle, so that you don’t end up with obesity and other serious health problems.

#17. Meal Planning for Obese Persons

Obesity results from either a hereditary gene or from a lifestyle that encourages weight gain and no burning of calories. Obese people will require a special meal plan to help increase their metabolism and reduce the rate of storage of glucose. Such a meal plan should have the goal of increasing the metabolic processes, but not reducing the appetite for food.

Therefore, before designing a meal plan one should remember that there are hours when an individual needs more energy. These would be morning hours for those who work during the day and early evening hours for those who work during the night. The amount of physical work involved should also be used to design the meal plan.

It is recommended that one eats fruits in the morning together with herbal remedies. This has the effect of cleansing the colon and preventing harmful bacteria from affecting the body. The morning meals should also include light carbohydrates such as porridge or cereal.

Short and light meals are good because they allow the body to effectively digest the food taken. Therefore a 10 o’clock snack is recommended. It could be composed of foods rich in proteins. Proteins are important for the body because they provide amino acids which are the building blocks of the cells and the organs.

Lunch should also be relatively light and composed of more fruits and vegetables. This will improve bowel function after lunch and prevent you from being too sleepy, especially on a warm afternoon.

Dinner should be served in the smallest portions, especially if the person is very obese. The conversion of glucose into fats happens during the hours when the body is at rest. For this reason, the habit of taking a glass of red wine has been misconceived as being healthy. While this may be the case for organs such as the heart, wine actually increases the chances of weight gain because of the high amounts of refined sugars that are present in it. These include fructose.

Finally, do not forget to drink lots of water. Taking at least eight glasses of clean drinking water a day is important and will help you in cutting down excess weight. This boosts the metabolic function reducing the amount of glucose in the blood. Water also cleanses the blood and increases its capacity for carrying oxygen. It also reduces the toxins in the skin through increased sweating. This leaves the skin healthy.

#18. Lose Weight with Home Exercises

Exercise is among the most important factors for a healthy life. By doing exercises every day, you are bound to lose excess weight. This will help to prevent obesity.

If you would like to exercise regularly, it is a good idea to enroll in a fitness center. They have specialists who will help you achieve a fit body. But, as these fitness centers charge high fees, it has become difficult for the average person to join them. Do not despair. The good news is that you can do the necessary exercises at home, without spending a fortune on fitness center fees. If you are suffering from obesity, it is high time that you concentrated on home exercises, which will help you lose weight naturally.

All you have to do is to carefully plan your daily exercise activity program, which will help you achieve the set weight loss target. There are two main types of exercises which help you fight obesity and reduce excess weight – aerobics exercises and strength training ones. Each of these two forms of working out has its own individual advantage for reducing weight. Aerobics workouts are known to burn fat content present in the body. Strength or fitness training helps increase the resting metabolic rate (RMR). In turn, this helps you burn calories while your body is at rest.

Here are few exercises which can be performed at home in order to lose weight.

1. Sit-ups: Do this exercise to burn fat deposits, which are stored in the buttocks and thigh region. Do the exercise in front of a mirror. While facing forward, sit down and pull your knees to your chest until your knees reach shoulder level. Now stand up slowly, keeping your hands upwards. You should do this exercise 10 – 15 times. This will work the buttock and thigh muscles and build your strength.

2. Push-ups: Like sit-ups, push-ups are necessary to increase the RMR of the body. In order to make the most out of this exercise, you will have to position yourself in such a way, so that around 70% of your body weight falls on your arms.

3. Skipping: Skipping falls in the aerobics category. It provides a complete workout for the body. Doing skipping between 100 and 500 times per day will help you burn the extra fat content in the body. This, in turn, will reduce your total weight over a period of time.

4. Fast Walking: fast paced walking also falls under aerobics and provides complete exercise to the body. Make sure you warm up before you do fast paced walking. This can be done by slow walking first.

Note: Obese people usually cannot do such exercises; they need to start off with something easier such as walking until they are fitter.

#20. Lose Weight the Therapeutic Way

One of the most common health problems that many people are facing is obesity. The modern life does not allow us to have particularly healthy eating habits and enough physical activity to stay fit and slim. Due to this, all the calories we consume are accumulated in the body and stored as fat.

This increases the overall weight and creates serious health problems. The best way to fight obesity and lose weight is to do exercises regularly and to have a proper control over the food we eat. It is necessary for any obese person to increase his resting metabolism rate (RMR) which will help burn calories even when resting.

You may have come across many products and supplements which are advertised as the best for losing weight and fighting obesity. Do not be fooled with these advertisements, as most of the products do not work. Moreover, they cause serious side effects. The best way to reduce weight and fight obesity is the natural way - with exercises and healthy food habits.

Apart from these options, you have another way for losing weight - the Therapeutic way. This method involves surgeries which are designed to remove all the excess fat content present in the body. These are prescribed to a few people. The surgery is carried out by a specialist doctor. In recent years, there has been a steady increase in weight loss surgeries.

People having an enormous amount of fat in their body, which prevents them from carrying out simple daily tasks, are advised to go for surgery, which reduces the excess fat content stored in the body effectively. The decision, however, depends on you completely. Still, it should be based on the advice from your doctor. If he thinks it is necessary, he will advise you to opt for the surgery. Despite this, the main weight loss methods one would recommend before the surgery are exercise and diet control.

The latest form of Therapeutic treatment is Bariatric surgery. This surgery is virtually a two-stage procedure consisting of gastric banding and gastric bypass.

If you are not into surgery, you can try therapeutic yoga. This is another method which is often suggested by doctors in order to keep stress eating under control. All the poses in Therapeutic yoga are designed to help you burn fat and lose weight naturally. Following a complete program will provide fruitful results. It will help you lose weight and fight obesity, keeping you away from hazardous health problems.

Most people who are overweight have tried to lose the extra pounds, but they usually reach a dead end because getting slimmer is not an easy job. However, many cases of obesity are due to a genetic predisposition. Therefore, coping with it is not a piece of cake.

This is one of the reasons why you should know that not every overweight person you see on the street has chosen to be fat, or that he/she cannot quit eating during the night, or that he or she is a glutton. The truth is that many people cannot control their body weight not because they are lazy, but because it is actually a serious health issue. You should differentiate between a person who wants to lose weight and a person who can actually do it. Some people turn to liposuction to remove the fatty tissue.

Liposuction is not the universal remedy even though many people choose to undergo the procedure to get rid of the fat once and for all. But if you have doubts about liposuction, you should not despair. You might have lost this fight, but the war is not over. The liposuction procedure is suitable for those who are fast goal achievers. You should definitely consider liposuction as a solution to your obesity problem if you have tried conventional methods and failed to achieve results.

#23. Is There Effective Obesity Treatment?

How far commercial medicines have been successful in treating obese patients is a matter of debate. The fact remains that most doctors and hospitals prefer treating patients with modern day commercially produced medicines. They argue that it is possible to do so because you know the chemical composition of the medicines thoroughly and, hence can look for alternatives in case a specific ingredient in the medicine does not deliver the desired results.

However, a great amount of research shows that there are a number of herbs that can prove to be effective for fighting obesity and for weight loss. These are now coming into the market providing solutions to the weight loss problem. It is believed that oyster shells and pearls are excellent for the control and treatment of obesity. This was discovered after a thorough research had been conducted on the books of the early Chinese emperors and their physicians who lived with them. Scientists are visiting oriental countries searching for those rare herbs and roots that are believed to hold the key to all problems related to obesity.

Scientists are also studying very closely the gene pattern and the DNA structure of obese people to understand the genetic cause of obesity. If that gene or genes can be isolated and then dealt with, it will be possible to eradicate and eliminate obesity from the world. The main problem is that the obesity epidemic looms large, despite the fact that strictly speaking, it is not a disease. It can lead to heart disease and other serious diseases including cancer.

Given all the efforts of scientists for finding a cure for obesity, the hopes that a breakthrough discovery will be made soon are high. It is certain that obesity and related problems will be a thing of the past, if the cure to the problem can be found.

The spine-chilling fact that almost 73% of the country’s population is obese is something that calls for immediate action. Children growing up to become obese adults are already are already predicted to have a bleak future with their risk of diseases growing by the minute. Unless their parents and society understand this, the heath of the future generations is put at serious risk. Since we do not know when a cure for obesity will be invented, it is best for various preventative measures to be taken, so that this problem is solved effectively.

#24. How to Keep that Weight Off

The foods you eat and the exercise you do determine how well you maintain your body weight. Once you achieve your weight loss goal, you need to adopt a healthy lifestyle and keep it. To lose weight permanently, you must commit yourself to adopting a healthier way of life because without it you will end up regaining weight.

Maintaining healthy weight is possible only if you have determination. However, it is easier to keep weight off in the first place than to get it off, so that in itself will provide motivation.  So set specific rules that will help you stick to your lifestyle changes religiously. Losing weight is half the battle won, but keeping weight off in the long run is the real raging war that you have to fight. It is important that you make a commitment to yourself to adopt a healthier lifestyle, so that you don’t fall back into the clutches of unhealthy eating habits that will make you gain weight. Maintaining a balance between the foods that you eat and the calories that you burn is essential if you really want to keep your body weight within normal limits.

You should never try to skip meals, as skipping them slows down your metabolism and can make you overeat later. Eat a variety of healthy foods, so that you get all the essential nutrients you need from your diet. Foods, such as whole grains and fruits and vegetables are a must for a healthy diet. Physical activity is also very important. By exercising regularly you stay active and end up burning excess calories at a faster rate. Monitoring your body weight frequently will help you stay on the right track.

Setting specific goals and getting motivation are the two factors that help you make a commitment to keeping weight off successfully. Both your commitment and your plans keep you on track and help you move in the right direction. Making a long term commitment to keep your weight under control rather than losing pounds for a special occasion will definitely keep you on the right track. Plus focusing on your health is more important than concentrating on your physical appearance. Making healthy lifestyle changes can help you reap big health rewards, such as lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol – not to mention becoming more attractive.

Once you have reached your weight loss goal, you should never stop eating healthy foods and exercising regularly, at least a couple of times a week. You need to continue with your healthy diet and stick to your daily exercise routine. Also, try to avoid situations that trigger food cravings. Do your best to avoid binging, especially if you have had this problem in the past. Start eating foods that promote weight maintenance, as this will be more in your favor.

In order to keep the weight you have accomplished, you need to avoid the common diet traps that make people regain their lost weight. Avoid using fad diets as they are not healthy and make you gain weight in the long run. These "miracle diets" tend to create miracles only for a short period and make you obese in no time.

Being consistent and sticking to your daily diet plan and exercise plan religiously will work out miraculously well. You will keep in top shape. You will feel more energetic and more active.

Joining a support group or at least relying on your loved ones for support will help you stay committed.  When you are supported by people that have been though the same thing and that you love and care for, you will find it easier not to indulge in eating and staying on the couch watching TV. It is a good idea for you to seek medical advice, every time you feel you have a problem with following your lifestyle plans.

The best way for losing weight is to focus more on lifestyle changes and to commit to a diet plan that is healthy, enjoyable and low in calories. Achieving and staying with a healthy weight needs perfect planning and hard work, but the rewards that you end up with really make up for the efforts.

The trick to keeping your weight off is in enjoying the healthy food you have and the exercises you are doing. You have to be happy with your lifestyle as well as to get health benefits from it.

#25. Gastric Banding - Does it Work

If you want to lose weight and have tried different diets and exercise patterns without success, then the best answer to your problem may be in restrictive surgery. The most popular solution is known as Gastric Banding. In this surgical procedure the surgeon uses a variety of techniques to reduce the size of your stomach. Gastric Banding is becoming the most common surgical procedure for treating obesity in the world, especially in America. Through this surgery you can reduce the capacity of the stomach. This will help you reduce the amount of food that you consume.

This method for weight loss is becoming popular mainly because it involves a minimal invasive procedure. The surgeon uses Laparoscopic techniques to make small incisions and using a long instrument, called laparoscope, implants an inflatable silicone band which is something like a wrist watch, around the upper stomach region. This band will help you control the quantity of food that you consume. The positive effect of the band is that the patient will feel as if they are having a full stomach after eating a small amount of food.

Gastric banding seems to work, as it is the least traumatic gastric procedure. It doesn’t involve cutting or stapling. Plus, given that it is done through a laparoscopic approach it results in reduced post operative pain and a quick recovery. And the best thing about Gastric Banding is that it is a reversible procedure. As soon as the gastric band is removed the stomach returns to its normal size.

Gastric banding is an adjustable treatment that really works for helping you lose weight. The diameter of the gastric band can be adjusted according to the desired weight loss rate for each individual case. Your individual requirements change as you lose weight. In turn, the band can be adjusted as well.

For instance, if a woman with a gastric band gets pregnant, she can also have her band adjusted accordingly. Women who are pregnant can easily get their gastric band adjusted to accommodate the growing fetus. On the other hand, patients who don’t experience weight loss can get their gastric band tightened. The gastric band can be adjusted with the use of a slain solution. It is connected to an access port by a tube, which is inserted under the skin of the patient undergoing treatment.

The gastric band helps you restrict the amount of food consumed. It also increases your sense of fullness, so that you end up feeling full after eating smaller portions. In this way you are able to control your calorie intake and, thus, end up losing weight in the process.

Due to the success of Gastric Banding surgery, it is now being used to treat slightly overweight people as well. It is turning out to be the right surgical method that is showing positive healthy outcomes.

Diseases like high cholesterol, cancer and hypertension can be a direct result from obesity. As gastric banding helps you reduce your body weight, it can also help you reduce your risk of developing these dangerous diseases.

Despite this, it is always best for people who opt for the gastric banding to carefully understand the pros and cons associated with this invasive procedure. In this way they can make a wise decision more confidently. Plus, this will also help them understand the full impact of the surgery. In turn, they will be able to handle the treatment and recover more effectively.

Gastric banding has a few risks involved. It has minimal side effects and a low mortality rate. These are other reasons why it has become the most popular treatment method. Plus, with its long term healthy result it is certainly matching people’s expectations. Most patients manage to get back to their normal weight successfully. People are considering gastric banding as the magic band for fighting obesity.

Gastric banding has become the safest weight loss surgical procedure. Furthermore, it has shown to produce effective results. By using it obese people get a chance to eliminate many health risks from their lives and to live a healthy and long life. With the excellent potential to reduce and control obesity in both males and females, gastric banding has really created uproar in the medical world.

#26. Dangers of Obesity in Seniors

Obesity is a problem for people of all ages from young to old. It can lead to serious medical conditions that can be life threatening. Seniors are already at a stage in their life in which their bodily functions slow down and their metabolic rate decreases. In turn, they are more likely to become obese and get serious medical problems. Furthermore, seniors are more likely to fall ill in general. Obesity may further complicate their health problems.

Aging is the main factor determining the health of a senior citizen and with obesity lurking in the fore front, health complications are more likely to occur. In turn, the elderly people are at higher risk of being affected by various diseases. Regrettably, most people are not even aware that they are medically obese. For this reason, awareness must be created so that positive steps can be adopted to get rid of obesity.

Obesity stands out as a real threat to longevity and healthy life. The dangers of excess body fat are many in adults. This is because with the advancing of age their body physiology slows down as and their body organs also don’t function as efficiently as in young adults. So seniors should take special care that they do not get obese.

The hearts of overweight seniors have to work harder to pump blood. This results in the enlargement of the heart muscle. This can lead to serious heart diseases. Hypertension is another health problem that senior adults face. The problem can go unnoticed for a long time and lead to heart disease. Additionally, obese people are at higher risk of getting high cholesterol. As cholesterol builds up in the arteries the blood flow is obstructed. This also leads to a higher risk of developing heart problems. If the internal organs stop getting adequate blood supply they cease to function properly.

The presence of excess body fat may result in a hormonal imbalance and lead to cancer. Similarly, some foods such as meat develop carcinogenic substances when they are exposed to excess heat. For all these reasons, older men are at a risk of developing prostate cancer while older women are more likely to fall victim to endometrial and breast cancer. In general, seniors who are obese are more likely to develop different kinds of gastrointestinal cancer, such as colorectal cancer.

Even though these are the main ones, there are innumerable other diseases that can result from obesity in seniors. That is why it is best that you always keep yourself in good shape. Adopt a healthy diet that can suit your comfort level and will work out best for you. Your diet can be planned by a medical expert who knows what ingredients will help you lose weight and stay healthy and fit for a long time. People who have an active lifestyle and good eating habits are less likely to suffer from such complications. It's time to take control over the situation as soon as possible as. Keep in mind that it’s never too late to get rid of the excess body weight by following precise health plans.

Depression is another problem that can be caused by obesity. Obese people are less likely to enjoy recreational activities and even simple ones, such as going to the local store. They are more worried about their looks. Furthermore, the more depressed you are the more you eat. This makes the problem even more serious. When a person feels depressed, certain hormones cause him to feel low and thus, he ends up indulging in activities like overeating. This makes him even more obese. In general, senior citizens are more likely to suffer from depression when they live a lonelier life and try to justify their loneliness by uncontrollable eating habit.

The reality is that by losing weight you can fix much of the damages caused by your obesity and reduce the risk factors of various diseases. Just by losing weight you can live a happier life. The lower weight guarantees ease of movement and brings more self confidence. This will allow you to enjoy life, despite your advanced age. This is beneficial for the physical as well as for the psychological health.

#27. Comparing Obesity in Developed and Undeveloped Countries

If you look closely at the demographic details of the world, you would find that most of the people with fat bellies and flabby limbs are from the developed countries in the world. Take for example the US. More than two-thirds of the population of the country is in a state of obesity, in one way or the other. Obese children are growing in numbers at a higher rate compared to adults.

Their regular consumption of junk foods, preference for fries over vegetables, the lack of fruit in their meals and a number of other factors have exposed them to obesity and a variety of diseases at a very young age. They live with the problem through the rest of their lives and always have to remain alert about warning symptoms appearing.

On the other hand, take a look at the African population. People from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and some other poor countries are well built, even though they may not be muscular. But they do not have cardiac problems chasing them throughout their life. They have a meal of fresh mostly vegetable produce and rarely cook their food. The fruits and berries collected from the forests and the fruits and vegetables produced in fields serve their purpose. The people in Africa do hard physical labor; there are no computers and no need for these people to sit all day breaking their heads with complex problems. They have a very simple lifestyle with a few wants. In turn, they get to experience very little stress.

African people do have other medical problems; however not obesity. Their lifespan is relatively short because they are weak and vulnerable to other diseases. But as far as cardiac diseases are concerned, they just do not have them. Their lean bodies are built to cope with the life in a tough natural environment. Their primary needs remain food, clothing and shelter.

Therefore, the conclusion is that the more inactive you are the greater your chances are developing heart disease. This health condition can pose imminent danger on your life. Fried chickens and French fries washed down with generous amounts of soda may sound delicious, but over a period of time the consequences are more damaging than anything else.

In order to avoid obesity or cure it, you should adopt a healthy lifestyle with more physical exercise and a diet with simple healthy foods. Reducing the stress in your life is equally important.

#28. Causes of Weight Gain and Obesity

Nowadays, there are frequent speculations on the causes of obesity and attempts to pinpoint the reasons for that widespread problem which has a grave impact on human health.

One reason for weight gain and obesity is insufficient or no physical exercise. This is due to Americans’ favorite pastime: lazing away in front of the TV or the computer. There is an increasing number of couch and mouse potatoes these days. People tend to do this almost 24/7, either in their workplace or at school. The lengthy period of time spent viewing social networking sites is another serious issue.

Despite suggestions that Americans should do some exercise, they allot that time to watching TV. In contrast, in many countries with no obesity problems it is not so unusual to see people walking to school or to work or cycling. It is a sad fact that our students do not bother to exercise enough. This leads to obesity, as they don’t burn the hefty amount of calories taken in with foods and beverages all day long. As they gain weight, people face an increasing number of health hazards leading to diseases that are common nowadays, like coronary heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer, to name but a few.

One of the reasons that prevent people from doing exercise is the insufficient opportunities for working out. For example, some neighborhoods have no sidewalks. This is not safe for those who want to exercise. The absence of parks and sports facilities also discourages them from stretching their legs. Furthermore, working for hours behind a desk as well as commuting also deprives us of opportunities to slim down.

Last but not least, Americans are offered king-size portions of food in all kinds of eateries from cafes to upscale restaurants. Most of these portions would suffice for a couple of people. By consuming hefty amounts of foods high in calories and fats, our bodies store the extra amounts and we become obese.

In downscale blocks, supermarkets that stock healthy foods such as fruit or vegetables are few and far between. In addition, such healthy produce is often too expensive for many people. People on a low income tend to prefer fast food outlets that offer foods packed with sugar and fats. Add to that the zillions of food commercials targeting mostly children and featuring enticing calorie-packed foods or beverages. To help the fight with obesity, such commercials should be at least limited, as they are just as harmful as cigarette commercials.

#30. Are You Obese

There are two types of fats in the human body - essential body fat and stored body fat. The first type is what is needed to maintain life and the reproductive functions, while the second type gathers in the connective tissues and around the body organs and is what usually causes obesity. How can you determine what is the percentage of fat in your body? Simply divide your total amount of fat by your body weight.

The ideal percentage of fat in the human body is between 1% and 19%. This means that if you have 20% body fat or higher, you are generally considered to obese.

Obesity is usually divided into three categories: mild, moderate and gross (also known as morbid obesity). Mild obesity is the most common, with 90% of obese people falling into this category. Mild obesity is diagnosed when the weight is 20%-40% above normal weight limits. Only 9% of people who suffer from obesity fall into the moderate category. Moderate obesity occurs when the weight is between 40% and 100% above the normal body weight. Lastly, only about 1% of those considered obese are classified as “grossly obese”. To be grossly obese, you must weigh over 100% of your normal body weight.

Although only 1% of the obese population is considered to be grossly obese, that number is quickly rising, as child obesity rates are skyrocketing around the globe. Many fast food companies target young children with toys and greasy, fattening products. A typical children's meal at a popular fast food restaurant contains roughly 600 calories, 23 grams of fat (6g saturated), and over 800mg of sodium. Obesity is undeniably a worldwide problem, but there are ways to fight it.

Knowing your daily recommended amount of calories, fat and carbohydrates is essential for staying healthy. Many people lack one of these nutrients and consume too much of another.  This leads to an unbalanced diet and can result in weight gain. It is important to know how much to eat exactly and what is present in the food that you eat. Reading nutrition information on packaged food is essential for knowing what is in your meal. Many chain restaurants offer nutritional information for most, if not all items on their menu. If you take the initiative to learn what is in your food, and you know how many calories, carbohydrates, and fat you need daily, you can lead a healthy lifestyle and fight obesity.

#31. All about Stomach Stapling

Stomach Stapling is also known as Vertical Banded Gastro-Plasty and it is a restrictive surgical method for weight control. A band and staple are used to create a small stomach pouch. At the bottom of this stomach pouch there is a hole, through which the stomach contents can flow in the stomach and into the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure helps slow down the passage of food and also helps to limit the amount of food the patient can eat.

Stomach stapling seems to work even better when it is combined with a mal-absorptive technique, with which some parts of the digestive tract are bypassed reducing the absorption of calories and nutrients. When combined, these techniques are known as gastric bypass techniques and are the latest surgical methods of reducing body weight.

Stomach stapling is a serious surgical intervention. It is effective for many patients, but there are also many side effects associated with it. It has also been observed that some patients who undergo stomach stapling suffer from psychological side effects.

Stomach stapling is an abdominal surgery. The incisions may get infected just like with any other type of surgery. Plus, at times people also get fever and doctors may recommend an antibiotic to reduce the effects of it. Some people even get blood clots, which can be quite dangerous. Some post-surgery patients get a feeling of nausea that is persistent. In some cases, patients fail to chew their food or eat larger amounts of food at a time.

There are many long term and short term side effects of stomach stapling. The short term ones include nausea, diarrhea and heartburn, while the long term ones are vitamin deficiency, stroke and at times, even death. When patients start to overeat this causes the stomach staples to come off. This detaching of the staples causes an emergency situation and if the patient is not treated in due time, the problem may cause death.

People also suffer from stomach cramps after stomach stapling if they eat food that is too hot or is high in carbs. Due to the accumulation of large amounts of cholesterol, gallstones may develop. Nearly thirty percent of the patients who have undergone stomach stapling end up with gallstones – that is a high percentage.

Stomach stapling also causes nutritional deficiency in some patients and they can end up suffering from metabolic bone diseases or osteoporosis. However, this deficiency can be prevented by consuming foods that are rich in iron, calcium and vitamin B-12.

Patients who have undergone this restrictive surgery can also end up with a stomach leakage. This usually happens when the concentration of the acidity increases due to gastric acids. The pouch ruptures and all the contents of the stomach go into the abdominal cavity. This is very dangerous for the vital organs, so you need to be very careful. If a rupture and a leakage occur, then you will certainly have quite dangerous health complications. Even though at times the rupture can be sealed in a natural way, in most cases surgery is needed to seal it up.

Despite the possible side effects, stomach stapling is considered to be the best medical weapon for overweight people to fight obesity and eliminate it completely from their life. The surgeon will determine the technique that will work best in your individual case. He will determine the best form of surgical treatment in line with certain factors, such as your weight loss goal and your individual health problems. In this way, things will be handled in a safe way and your treatment will work effectively. Just keep in mind that even after the surgery you need to adopt a healthy lifestyle, so that you end up with long term health benefits.

It is also essential that you follow the dietary recommendations that are provided by your dietitian. Otherwise you may not lose weight through this surgical procedure. The fact is that it is not only stomach stapling that will make you lose weight. You need to make lifestyle and diet changes to lose weight. This invasive weight loss solution can help you to lose weight to an extent and for this reason you need to set yourself realistic goals.

#32. Apple peel – A possible treatment for obesity

Apple peels might never have occurred to you as a treatment option for obesity. However, they have been found to be very effective at treating obesity.

Obesity is one of the growing health concerns for not only adults but also children all over the world. It is defined as the excess amount of fat accumulated. It is a health condition that one develops gradually over a period of time, because of several factors. The causes of obesity can range from poor diet or unhealthy eating habits to genetic inheritance. Most of the times, obesity is a result of consumption of large amount of fats, which because excess gets stored as fats instead of being used as energy. Another reason why it gets stored as fats is lack of physical activity, because of which it does not get burned.

Lifestyle factors apart from eating too much of fatty foods that can cause obesity are several. Even if you have or develop a habit of eating a portion larger than you actually require during a meal can cause you to become obese in the future. People who have a habit of consuming excessive amounts of alcohol also tend to be obese as these drinks contain lot of calories. Some people have a habit of comfort eating, meaning that they may take comfort by eating whenever they are depressed or have a low self-esteem. The effect of all these factors is only multiplied with lack of physical activity.

Today, most people have jobs that are sedentary by nature, owing to the globalised world that we are living in. Even children, who a few years back, had outdoor games to occupy their free time now have computer games and other indoor activities, which keep them sedentary. No use of the consumed energy only leads, as discussed above, to accumulating it as fat in your body. Some people may be more prone to developing this condition, because they are genetically more likely. Some can also become obese because of certain medical conditions such as Cushing’s syndrome, hypothyroidism and PCOS. Obesity is also known to cause several health problems, which could be avoided by taking prescription weight loss tablets like Xenical.

Xenical is the only prescription medication that has by far been found to be effective in treating obesity effectively. Orlistat, the main ingredient of this obesity medication plays a key role in the treatment of this condition. It works by reducing the amount of fat being digested and absorbed by your body by one-third. This leads to a decrease in the accumulation of fat in your body. People using this medication just as prescribed, along with changing their diet habits and regular physical activity, have been able to experience results within as little as three months. However, a more natural method has been found to help in the treatment of obesity, apple peel.

An apple peel, it is said consists of a waxy compound ursolic acid which helps in treating obesity. This compound is a calorie burning compound, which was found to help in increasing the muscles and burn the calories. Muscles are in fact very effective at burning fat, which helps how ursolic acid present in an apple peel can lead to treating obesity peel. So people who want to try some natural treatment method for obesity can try apple peels and see the results for themselves.

#33. Is It My Fault That My Child Is Obese

As childhood obesity sweeps across the globe, and across the United States in particular, many parents are asking whether they are responsible for their child's obesity. This is a difficult question, but one for which there is an answer.

Whether or not it is your fault that your child is obese is a very difficult question to answer although, in most cases, it is probably true to say that you are at least in part to blame. What is true however is that it is certainly your responsibility as a parent to lead to fight to solve the problem. But where do your start? Most children will follow the lead of their parents and so your starting point must be to make sure that you are following a healthy diet.

If you are not eating properly and are existing largely on junk foods and snacks then your child will be eating junk food and snacks, on the one hand because he is simply following your lead and on the other hand because that is probably all that is available in the house. There is nothing wrong with snacks and junk food as long as they form only a small part of your diet.

For example, ordering in a pizza or stopping off at a hamburger restaurant is fine, as long as you are doing it as a treat once in a while and not eating that way seven days a week. The vast majority of fast food and snacks including pizzas, hamburgers, kebabs, take-away Chinese food and microwave popcorn are high in fat, high in salt, high in sugar and have very little nutritional value. So, if you cannot already do so, learn to cook and ensure that at least five days out of the week you sit down as a family for a healthy meal, planning your meals to give everyone a good balance of low fat and highly nutritional meals including plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit.

Do not forget too that, while you can change your own eating habits and get your children to follow your lead at home, you also need to monitor what they are eating when they are away from home. This is not always easy but the answer is very often simply one of education. If your child is going to be eating in the school cafeteria then talk to him about buying healthy foods rather than pizza and french fries.

It is also often worth talking to the school as a growing number of schools now have 'healthy eating' programs and are developing various plans which allow parents to monitor their kids eating habits at school. The other side of the diet equation is exercise and this again is an area in which you as a parent have a role to play.

As a society we have become obsessed with the safety of our kids and are afraid to let them out on their own for fear that some pedophile is lurking on the corner waiting to snatch them or that they might fall off their bike and injure themselves or catch some deadly airborne disease.

Now, we should not of course make light of what can be very real dangers, but we must also keep them in perspective and realize that we cannot protect our children completely from the dangers of the real world and then expect them to be able to go out into the world and stand on their own two feet the moment they grow up and leave home. Again the answer here lies largely in education and in setting into place systems which allow you to monitor their activity and give you peace of mind.

Teaching children about the dangers that surround them and how to cope with them is far better than simply shielding them from them them. Simple plans such as letting your kids go out to play as long as they take a friend (or group of friends) along, giving them a cell phone and having them phone in at regular intervals or giving them a gps tracking watch to wear are just some of the many things you can do to keep your children safe, while also encouraging them to get out and take some exercise.

Parenting is an incredibly rewarding experience, but it is also hard work and when it comes to tackling the problem of child obesity you will need to spend time and do some work to ensure that your child eats properly and takes the right amount of exercise. Of course adjusting your own diet and getting yourself up and running around a bit more will not do you any harm either.

#34. New Study Links Obesity to Periodontitis

New research has shown that obesity may increase susceptibility to gum disease. Researchers hope that this new information will help us develop a new treatment to gum disease.

Periodontitis is a blanket term for common gum disease, and new research has shown that this gum disease just might be linked to obesity. The study, done right here at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry Oral Health Institute, explains a correlation between obese patients and prevalence of periodontal disease.

The researchers of the study believe that the patients have a higher prevalence to periodontal disease due to what they call chronic nutritional stress. The study is titled “MicroRNA Modulation in Obesity and Periodontitis” and it was published in the Journal of Dental Research.

The researchers in the study looked at the prevalence of a bacteria called MicroRNA and studied how prevalent it was in patients who were obese compared to those whose BMI (body mass index) was lower.

“The expression of specific microRNA species in obesity provides new insight into possible mechanisms of how risk factors might modify periodontal inflammation and may represent novel therapeutic targets," said the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Dental Research, William Giannobile.

What this means is that now that scientists have this new information about the prevalence of this bacteria in obese patients, they can start developing some treatment technologies specifically targeted at those who are more at risk for periodontal disease. It is much easier for researchers to develop treatments when they know which kinds of patients they are developing the treatment for.

#35. Capsiplex Plus - The Answer To The Growing Obesity Crisis

With the growing crisis of obesity around the world continuing to rise and showing no signs of stopping, it is no wonder that countless people are becoming more and more interested in ways that they can lose weight--but sometimes, diet and exercise just aren't enough. Many people find that traditional diet and exercise just aren't enough—so they turn to products to help them lose weight.

One of the most popular of these products is called Capsiplex, or Capsiplex Plus. Capsiplex or Capsiplex Plus a food supplement designed to raise your metabolism and help you burn more calories than you would without taking this supplement. Essentially, Capsiplex is a metabolic stimulant that increases the metabolism and therefore increases weight loss by causing more calories to be burned in a day.

What ingredients are used in Capsiplex?

The most important of Capsiplex ingredients is called Capsicum, which is the Latin name for Cayenne or red chili peppers. Red chili peppers have long been used in medicinal purposes, and their ability to raise the metabolism has been known for years as well—but is only in recent years that a pill which contains concentrated Cayenne peppers--yes, this is referring to Capsiplex ingredients--has been developed. Unlike regular forms of concentrated peppers, Capsiplex does not cause irritation. Capsiplex is delivered in a special beadlet designs which ensures that the throat and lining of the throat, intestines and stomach is not irritated by the capsicum extract.

Does it work?

Yes. A clinical study on the effectiveness of Capsiplex and Capsiplex Plus showed that, on average, people who consumed Capsiplex daily on a regular basis had an increased metabolism which, given the right conditions, would result in increased weight loss. However, the effectiveness of Capsiplex may be dependent on two factors which are also important to weight loss in general: diet and exercise.

Those who participated in the clinical study and engaged in daily or at least consistent exercise found that Capsiplex caused an increase in around 278 calories burned during each exercise session. While this may not seem like an excessive amount of calories at first glance, it's important to note that 278 calories adds up over time--An additional 278 calories burned is equal to 80 minutes of walking at 2 miles per hour, 25 minutes of jogging at 6 miles per hour and adds up to about 25 lbs. of additional weight loss each year… assuming, of course, that a healthy diet and exercise plan is continued.

Those who did not exercise daily or did not consume a healthy diet did not see as many results as those who did stick to a healthy diet and engaged in regular active behaviors, such as exercise and general physical activity.

Capsiplex side effects can include a jittery feeling, anxiety, and in people who are sensitive to cayenne pepper, occasionally irritation or over-stimulation can occur. Over-stimulation generally manifests itself in a feeling of "too much" energy, listlessness, and the inability to fully concentrate or focus on tasks.

There have been some celebrities using the product too, most notably Nicola McLean who is a glamour model in the united kingdom. She managed to lose approximately four stone in weight following her pregnancy thanks to Capsiplex. It was also heavily featued in the media, news, and papers which caused 50,000 units to sell out in just three days.

Following this the manufacturer added 5-HTP tablets which release endorfins into your body. These help make you feel happier and more upbeat about your weight loss. Although they are optional, so you can get the diet pills on their own if you want to.

#36. 7 strategies to stop eating junk food

FACT: Obesity accounts for 300,000 deaths a year in the U.S. alone.

Research into how junk food and fast food restaurants affect obesity, have found that there may be a relationship between the number of people per fast food restaurant and how many square miles there are between fast food restaurants located within your local area and obesity rates.

The way in which we eat, and what we eat, is of vital importance to our state of health. The convenience and habitual nature of the problem mean that fast food consumption is so in-grained, that healthy eating is near impossible.

There are no easy ways to fix junk food habits and make them into healthy habits, but I do have 7 quick strategies that you can easily put into place to start into motion your new lifestyle without junk food. I recommend implementing these one at a time, to ensure that you don't overload and burn yourself out.

1. Do your shopping every week. Make it a regular habit to do your groceries every single week on the same day.

2. Make a shopping list on the computer with all the regular foods that you buy, to ensure that you aren't going to run out of food at the end of the week, tempting you to reach for the fast food pamphlet, running out for take-away or buying unnecessary food items.

3. Don't starve yourself !!!!!!! Eat 6 small meals instead of 3 large ones, snacking on healthy foods such as a fat burning apple, protein packed, metabolism raising light salad with boiled eggs and flaxseed oil dressing.

4. Make food your hobby. Join a cookery class. There are often many community classes that you can enrol in inexpensively to learn how to prepare interesting food.

5. Unplug the TV at the point. You will be less likely to sit there and watch it aimlessly if you have to make a conscious effort to turn it on. Particularly around 6-8 pm, the junk food restaurants will advertise, watch a DVD during these times. A recent review of childhood obesity research, has, not surprisingly found that the amount of time you spend watching TV has a direct affect on being overweight.

6. Try this recipe when you are feeling peckish to curb your need to buy junk food, or feeling the urge to have a smoke.

2 eggs beaten

1 Chopped lean bacon rasher - no fat.

1 chopped canned tomato

1/4 cup soy milk/low fat milk

1 finely chopped leaf spinach/frozen spinach

Sprinkling of low fat cheese

Mix ingredients together in mixing bowl. Transfer into a microwave safe bowl and cook on high for 2 minutes or until eggs have solidified. Eat with a low GI bread. You'll find that depending on the quantity eaten, it can be a filling snack or light dinner.

7. When eating out. Avoid the restaurants with the all-you-can-eat option. These restaurants unfortunately encourage people to eat until they are bloated. Researchers found that 20% of weight gain among freshman University students could be attributed to their eating in the all-you-can-eat student dining halls.

#37. Presidential Fitness Challenge: A Right Step To Curb Obesity

Obesity is fast emerging as a health problem the world over. The US seems to be among the countries that have been worst hit by fat-attack. It is quite evident from the fact that the President of the United States could not ignore the situation and brought the presidential fitness challenge into effect. This is an effort to encourage and fire enthusiasm in children and adults alike to exercise and stay fit.

Presidential fitness challenge gives ample room to the children to be active in any way they feel like. They can choose any such physical activity that they like and stay active with it. The goal of the measure is to have children exercise for at least an hour every day for five days in a week. They are, therefore encouraged to pick any physical activity of their choice from low-intensity workouts like walking to high intensity activities like playing basketball or football.

Adults too can participate in the program and the goals for them are similar. But there are a few modifications in the requirements considering the busy schedule of an average American. For an American adult thirty minutes of exercisign is enough for a day, provided the frequency of the workouts is maintained regularly

The US seems quite serious about its rising average body weight as more and more people are being diagnosed obese everyday. It is important for children to learn the benefits of exercising so as to be active and fit all through their lives. It is also observed that the children who play passive games lose their ability to enjoy rigorous games and eventually start feeling tired and bored doing their daily chores. This is disheartening because any fellow who goes to the gym can tell you as to how elated they feel after working out.

A person doesn't only feel the spark of energy in his body but also in his mind and spirit. This feeling of wellness plays a vital role in generating enthusiasm and boosting one's self image, which, in turn, bolsters one's self confidence and makes one feel and perform better. Therefore, a regular workout keeps one, fit and confident. What else can one ask for.

#38. Drugs Which Work For Obese Adults May Not Work For Obese Teens

Traditionally doctors have approached obesity by starting with a program of diet and exercise which, if unsuccessful on its own, is then supplemented with drug treatment. However, it would seem that a drug commonly used in adults may not work when prescribed for obesity in teenagers.

As with adults the first line of attack for obesity in teenagers is normally a carefully controlled program of diet and exercise. In many cases however this does not do the trick and so many doctors will move on to supplement this treatment with drugs, commonly choosing a drug which has been used with limited success in adults.

Sibutramine, which is sold within the United States under the trade name of Meridia®, is an appetite suppressant which affects appetite control centers within the brain to decrease appetite and which has been shown to have some affect in assisting with weight loss in adults when taken in combination with a low calorie diet. However, a recent study suggests that it does not produce the same results when used in teenagers.

In adult patients sibutramine increases both the metabolic rate and the feeling of fullness so that fewer calories are consumed and more of those calories are burned off but, in a trial involving twenty four teenagers who were given either sibutramine or a placebo the same affects were not forthcoming.

At the end of a twelve week trial the weight loss of patients in both groups was virtually identical although, interestingly enough, weight in the group given sibutramine stabilized following the trial but actually continued in the placebo group.

In both groups body composition and metabolic rates were measured using underwater weighing techniques and x-ray imaging and no significant differences were found between the two groups.

In addition, resting metabolic rates were measured for both groups and, while the rate decreased at first in the placebo group and remained constant in the sibutramine group, it later increased in the placebo group and decreased in the sibutramine group.

Overall it would seem that for some reason, which is as yet not understood, not only does sibutramine not assist obese teenagers in losing weight, but it might actually slow the rate of weight loss in the longer term.

#39. How Stress Can Cause Obesity

There are many known stress conditions such as emotional, mental and physical stress. How these types of conditions make you gain weight? Its simple, you don't gain weight from stress itself, you gain weight from how you react from stress. A feeling of distress and disappointments are a sign of a stress condition, once you experience this feeling, you tend to relax and eat what ever you want which makes you think can help you get calm and comfortable.

See the picture? For your information, overeating is the main root of obesity and if you don't realize that you are already over the limit of your regular eating habit, then you definitely gain weight in no time.

Stress makes you more prone to mindless munching. This is called irresponsible eating. When you are eating without control, without hesitation and without consideration, emotional and mental stress are the main culprit why you can't stop eating.

How about physical stress? How does it affect your health? First off, you have to first determine how you are getting physical stress. The most common physical stress is lack of sleep and we know that if a person has trouble sleeping, he or she tends to add another meal time for his schedule - night snack! Not having enough sleep is not only health damaging, but it can also lead to many conditions like decreased immune system which leads to other deadly diseases.

#40. Are Wii Kidding Ourselves

Is the Nintendo Wii Fit going to help fight America's growing obesity problem, or contribute to it?

The Nintendo Wii Fit was released to the public recently with much ballyhoo. If you haven't seen the Nintendo Wii game system, it is the latest evolution in video game playing where players use the remote to mimic real-life actions such as a tennis forehand. The players' physical actions are then played out on the screen.

The Wii Fit is a "game" that according to the Nintendo website can increase your fitness levels. "By playing Wii Fit a little every day, you, your friends, and your family can work towards personal goals of better health and fitness," the site claims. While I have yet to use the game at all, I can say that I am highly skeptical that this will make a dent into America's growing obesity problem.

The Wii Fit comes with a balance board that the player uses to interact with the game. When you first start the game, the Wii Fit assesses your balance - which is important in your overall health, but is usually not a concern to anyone who is not a senior citizen or recovering from injury.

It then moves on to perform the Body Test, which is more balance assessment, followed by the calculation of Body Mass Index (or BMI). BMI is a very flawed measure of one's fitness, as it measures the ratio of one's scale weight to one's height. So, on the BMI scale, the following people are considered Overweight or Obese:

- Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees

- Tom Brady of the New England Patriots

- Lance Armstrong of cycling fame

- Arnold Schwarzenegger

- Sylvester Stallone

See where I'm going with this? Scale weight does not account for the amount of lean body mass someone is carrying. That is why body fat percentage is the gold standard for measuring one's fitness.

Also, measuring BMI on anyone under 19 is very inaccurate. This already has become an issue for Nintendo, as a 10-year old athletic British girl was assessed as being Fat by the game. Obesity experts jumped on Nintendo immediately, rightfully stating that the game could cause irreparable harm to a child's body image. Nintendo has since added a disclaimer that the BMI feature is meant for adults only, but hasn't taken the step of deactivating it in the game for child users.

The game goes on to calculate a Wii Fit Age for the user based on your balance test results, actual age, etc. Again, this is a very shaky measure of one's fitness that could mislead people.

The Training section of the game is broken down into four sections: Yoga, Balance Games, Strength Training and Aerobics, all of which can be done without spending the $89.95 suggested retail price for Wii Fit.

Let's break down the Strength Training section as an example of some of the flaws in this game. The first exercise is a Single Leg Extension, which is more of an exercise in balance than a strength training exercise. Also, leg extensions do not mimic a real life use of the leg, and the leg extension machine is perhaps one of the worst machines in the gym.

The next exercise is torso twists, which is more of a dynamic stretch than a strength building exercise, especially in the absence of any weighted bar or dumbbells. That is followed by the push-up and side plank. Now, I'm a big fan of both of these exercises, but they are not for the de-conditioned. Most men are not capable of doing pushups with correct form, and women usually start out with the modified push-up until they have the strength to do regular form.

The next exercise, jack-knifes, is for people who are advanced in their training. It violates one of the basic principles of fitness professionals around the world - never put a de-conditioned person on their back on the floor for anything. Lastly, the game makes the user perform lunges, which are great muscle builders. However, like stated before, you don't need to buy a game system to do them.

Overall, I give Nintendo credit for trying to make a game that tries to get people to be more active, which is more than can be said for other video game manufacturers. However, this will not do anything in terms of chipping away at the American obesity problem. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that the video game industry needs to follow the route of the tobacco and alcohol manufacturers, and state that excessive use of their product could lead to inactivity and obesity, rather than try to make a half-hearted effort at increasing American activity levels.

Rather than letting your kids play Wii Fit while you watch TV in the other room, here are some things that you can do together:

- Go for a brisk walk

- Group session with a personal trainer

- Navigate a confidence course

- Play catch with a football or baseball

- Kick a soccer ball around

- One-one-one basketball

- Walk and play a par 3 golf course

- Family yard work or snow shoveling!

You'll save money on electricity and form stronger bonds with your kids as you increase your fitness levels together.
