the water. Lila felt like she was floating between worlds; between childhood and something else, something bigger.
That night, she tucked the comic under her pillow and dreamed of flying over Manhattan, cape billowing, teeth sparkling, saving the day one cavity at a time.
“The Cola Conspiracy”
It was a week after the Manhattan dentist adventure, and Lila Monroe had returned to her usual routine on Governor’s Island; school, chores, and decoding the secret messages in her Superman comics. But something strange was happening at the PX; the Post Exchange store where military families bought snacks, supplies, and the occasional comic book.
The soda machine, a hulking chrome beast with faded buttons and a suspicious hum, had begun to misbehave. Press “Root Beer” and out came a can of tomato juice. Choose “Orange Soda” and the machine spat out a folded note that read; “The truth is carbonated.”
Lila was intrigued. She began testing combinations. Pressing “Cola” twice and “Grape” once produced a can labeled “Classified.” Inside was a miniature comic strip featuring
