its quiet rhythm beneath them, as if relieved to host a duet again.
A breeze nudges a paper cup into their path. One steps over it; the other kicks it gently, sending it tumbling like a lazy oracle. It lands upside down. No message today.
They pass a fence painted with vines that aren’t real, but aspire to be. A dog barks once, then reconsiders. Somewhere, a sprinkler starts its ritual, ticking like a metronome for suburban time.
They continued along the Path of Slightly Uneven Stones, a sacred corridor said to be laid by the Bureau of Journeys Never Taken. Each crack in the pavement was a rune, each weed a whisper from the Old Botanists who once governed the Ministry of Sidewalk Flora.
As they walked, the air shimmered faintly; not with heat, but with the residue of unspoken oaths. The crow, now revealed to be a minor deity of Surveillance and Mild Judgment, flapped once and vanished into a cloud shaped like a bureaucratic seal.
One of them reached into their coat and withdrew the Token of Continuance; a receipt from a long closed café, marked with the sigil of a half eaten scone. The other nodded solemnly. The ritual was proceeding as foretold.
