The check came. It was blank. Payment was optional, but leaving was mandatory.

As they stepped outside, the sky began to clear. The clocks stopped floating. And for a moment, he wondered if the umbrella had ever existed at all; or if it had simply been a metaphor for shelter, borrowed and returned.

 

They continued their walk; past the rustling hedges that whispered secrets of the morning, past the lamppost that leaned ever so slightly like it had something to confess. The sidewalk buckled in places, as if the earth itself had sighed too deeply. One of them paused to inspect a chalk drawing; a sun with too many rays, a house with no door, and a stick figure labeled “Me?” in uncertain scrawl.

The other kept walking, not out of impatience but ritual. Every third step was slightly longer, a rhythm only they understood. A crow watched from the power line, head tilted, as if judging the choreography from its own angle.

They catch up—one with a half-jog, the other slowing just enough to make it seem like coincidence. No words exchanged, just the soft syncopation of footsteps realigning. The sidewalk resumes
