tea the way she used to; three bags, no sugar, a splash of almond milk and a poem recited under her breath. But the words wouldn’t come. Dreams are stingy with answers.
Instead, she handed him a folded napkin. On it was a map of a city that didn’t exist, with a red X marked over a place called “Regret Café.”
“Meet me there,” she said, and then the train dissolved into feathers.
He woke up with the taste of her name on his tongue and the feeling that something had been returned to him; not the umbrella, but the ache it had sheltered.
The café was tucked between a laundromat that only washed memories and a bookstore that sold blank pages. Its sign flickered in cursive neon; “Regret Café – Open Until You’re Ready.”
He arrived not late but after her, as always. The hostess, who wore a name tag that read “Yesterday,” led him to a table by the window. Outside, people walked backward, trying to retrace steps they hadn’t meant to take.
