“The Umbrella in Her Hair”
He hadn’t thought of her in months. Not consciously, anyway. But one night, without warning or invitation, she arrived in his dream wearing the same denim jacket she used to wear when walking her dogs by the river; the one with the broken zipper and the smell of rain stitched into its lining.
They were on a train that didn’t stop. It passed through cities that looked like old postcards; sepia toned, slightly curled at the edges. She sat across from him, reading a book with no title, her hair long and in bangs in that way that used to make him forget what he was saying.
“You never returned my umbrella,” she said, without looking up.
He blinked. “I didn’t know it was yours.”
She smiled, but it was the kind of smile that belonged to someone else wearing her face. “It’s okay. I only lent it to you so you’d have a reason to come back.”
The train lurched. Outside, the sky was filled with floating clocks, each ticking in a different rhythm. He wanted to ask her what she’d been doing all these years, whether she still made
