“The Bicycle That Rode the Wind”
It began with a rusted bell and a map that only showed places you’d already forgotten. He found the bicycle leaning against a lamppost that flickered in Morse code; perhaps spelling out warnings, or invitations. Its frame shimmered faintly, like it had been dipped in moonlight and left to dry.
He pedaled once and the world folded.
The road beneath him unraveled like a ribbon, winding through landscapes that refused to settle. One moment he was gliding past fields of whispering wheat, each stalk humming a different lullaby. The next, he was coasting through a city made entirely of mirrors, where every reflection was a version of him he hadn’t yet become.
Birds flew backward. Time hiccupped. A cloud offered him tea.
He passed a bureaucratic checkpoint staffed by owls in monocles who demanded to see his “License for Wonder.” He offered them a poem instead. They stamped it with approval and gave him a sticker that read; “This rider is authorized to dream recklessly.”
