The Merry Milkman
It was a rainy Saturday in October, 1954, the kind that made puddles dance and windows fog. Inside a cozy house in Cloverdale, four year old Theo was already in his favorite red socks, bouncing with excitement. Today was special. His parents had promised to play “The Merry Milkman” board game with him, a treasure they’d found on sale at Woolworth’s, complete with tiny milk trucks and cardboard houses.
Theo’s mom spread the game out on the living room rug while his dad read the rules aloud in a mock serious announcer voice: “Deliver milk, cheese, and eggs to your customers. Avoid traffic jams and barking dogs!”
Theo giggled. “I’m gonna be the fastest milkman ever!”
He chose the blue milk truck, which he immediately named “Speedy Moo.” His mom picked the yellow one; “Buttercup,” and his dad took the green “Sir Dairyton.” The game began with a roll of the dice, and Theo was off, zooming his truck past the bakery and the schoolhouse, making mooing sounds with every move.
“Speedy Moo needs to deliver milk to Mrs. Crumble!” Theo announced, placing a tiny milk bottle token on a cardboard doorstep.
