Act III: Yuppie Ascension
By 1983, they were yuppies in full bloom. Miriam ran a boutique think tank that advised corporations on “ethical branding.” Calvin managed a hedge fund that invested in alternative education startups. They lived in a loft with exposed brick and a curated collection of protest memorabilia.
But their satire never died. It just went private. They hosted dinner parties where guests were assigned ideological roles and had to argue against their own beliefs. They published a zine called “The Irony Index,” which tracked the market value of former revolutionaries.
And every year, on the anniversary of their first seminar, they reenacted their college selves; tweed jackets, footnote essays, and a dramatic reading of the course catalog. It was their ritual of remembrance, their way of honoring the absurdity that birthed them.
