But beneath the satire, something real was forming. A kind of intellectual intimacy. They didn’t believe in the system, but they believed in each other’s ability to see through it. They were skeptics, yes, but not nihilists. Their doubt was a form of care, a refusal to accept the world as it was handed to them.
By the time graduation loomed, Calvin had decided not to go into banking. Miriam had burned her “Official Nonsense” notebook in a ritual involving incense and a borrowed, dog eared and worn, copy of “The Communist Manifesto.” They didn’t know what came next, but they knew it wouldn’t be on the syllabus.
As they walked across the stage to receive their degrees, Calvin leaned toward Miriam and said, “So what do we do now?”
She smiled. “We start our own seminar. No credits. No grades. Just questions worth asking.”
