The Bridge
Charlie, the newly appointed steward of the Bureau of Dreams to be Continued, had barely finished filing the NYC homecoming dream when the pneumatic tube coughed up another envelope. This one was heavier than fog, wrapped in a velvet ribbon that whispered when touched.
He opened it.
Inside was a dream of a woman standing at the edge of a vast, unfinished bridge. Beneath her, a river of forgotten promises flowed backward. The bridge extended only halfway across, ending abruptly in midair. On the far side stood a version of herself-older, wiser, wearing a crown made of unpaid bills and childhood drawings.
The dream pulsed with indecision.
Charlie, sensing this one required more than filing, summoned the Bureau's ceremonial kettle and brewed a cup of Ambiguity Tea, the kind that tastes like both regret and possibility. He sipped, then consulted the Bureau's sacred ledger; The Codex of Deferred Symbolism.
It offered no guidance.
