Jamie stepped up to the counter, eyes wide. “One Oreo Blizzard, please. Upside down.”
The girl nodded, scooped, blended, and—like a magician revealing her final trick, turned the cup upside down for a split second. Not a drop fell.
Jamie gasped. “It’s real.”
His mom snapped a photo. His dad ordered a dipped cone. And for the next twenty minutes, they sat in a red booth, licking, laughing, and watching the lights of the cars of the world go by through the glass.
Outside, the old lamplighter toiled away. But inside Dairy Queen, time melted slower than soft serve in October.
