In the backseat, seven year old Jamie bounced with anticipation, sneakers tapping a rhythm against the vinyl floor.
“Is it really true?” he asked for the fifth time. “They swirl the ice cream upside down?”
His mom chuckled from the passenger seat. “That’s what the commercial said. If it doesn’t flip, it’s free!”
His dad, gripping the wheel like a man on a mission, nodded solemnly. “We’re about to find out.”
The new Dairy Queen had opened just two weeks ago, and already it was the talk of the town. Kids whispered about Blizzards like they were magical artifacts. Parents debated the merits of the FlameThrower burger versus the classic Dilly Bar. But for Jamie, it was all about the swirl.
They pulled into the lot, where a red-and-white sign gleamed like a beacon: DAIRY QUEEN – FAN FOOD, NOT FAST FOOD. Jamie leapt from the car before it had fully stopped, his parents trailing behind like cautious chaperones to his sugar fueled dreams.
Inside, the air smelled of waffle cones and fryer oil. A teenager in a crisp visor greeted them with a smile that suggested she’d already flipped a dozen Blizzards that day.
