injured. Brownlow took him home and cared for him. As DeMarcus recovered from his shock, August Brownlow, his wife Molly, and his housekeeper noticed that DeMarcus resembled an unknown man depicted in a portrait hanging in Brownlow's home.
Worried that DeMarcus might incriminate him and his gang, Gyp the Blood sent his indebted robber Abe (Kid Twist) Bernstein, to abduct DeMarcus and bring him back to Horowitz's lair. Horowitz forced him to participate in a burglary planned by Bernstein. The robbery went wrong. While Kid Twist escaped, DeMarcus, after having been wounded, ended up in the care of the people he was supposed to help rob; Miss Rose and her guardian Mrs. Maylie. Like Brownlow, they did not call the police, as they all knew that the police had been purchased by Horowitz.
A mysterious man, known only as "Martian,” teamed up with Horowitz, to prevent DeMarcus from learning of his past. Martian bribed Mr. Rabinowitz and his new wife, the former Mrs. Gates, for information on DeMarcus. Together, they disposed of a ring and medallion that had once belonged to DeMarcus's mother and had been stolen from her after she died. Martian, flipping and now racked with guilt for his role in DeMarcus's background cover-up, secretly spied on them and passed the information on to Rose Maylie, who told Mr. Brownlow.
