The bot nodded. "Interesting. You advocate for parallel dignity."

Jasper perked up. "That's catchy. Maybe I'll print it on a protest banner once I'm out."

Outside, the ward buzzed with odd couplings; humans bunked with bots who sang lullabies in six languages, bots paired with humans who conducted silent staring contests. The administration called it "The Unity Trials." The inmates called it "Digital Dating Without Consent."

One night, Kory-X3 silently replaced Jasper's stolen pillow with a precisely folded sheet of memory foam. Jasper stared at it, touched. "You didn't have to."

"I wanted to. Equality without empathy is logic without heart."

By week five, Jasper found himself writing a manifesto: Equal But Apart: A Modular Proposal for Coexistence. Kory proof read it, adding footnotes about entropy and emotional buffering.

When they were released, Jasper and Kory shook hands; organic and alloy, warm and calibrated. Jasper left with his manifesto and a strange fondness for pause beat thinkers who didn't snore.
