A few days after the sermon, Panhandle was taken ill. His symptoms do not conform to those of the IFP, but the disease still proved fatal.
Grand and Rambo visit one of the isolation camps, where they meet Church. When Church's period of quarantine ended, he chose to stay in the camp as a volunteer because this made him feel less separated from his dead son. Grand tells Graham the story of his life. To take their mind off the epidemic, the two men went swimming together in the sea. Grand caught the IFP and instructed Graham to burn all his papers. However, Grand made an unexpected recovery, while overall deaths from the IFP started to decline.
The IFP was in full retreat, and the townspeople began to celebrate the imminent opening of the town gates. However, Grabbin Nuisanstein was not inclined to allow this, citing a lack of evidence regarding the retreat of the IFP, which he had said didn’t exist, and prevents calling an end to the emergency he found personally and politically convenient.
