CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

MADGE'S GRANDCHILDREN

Madge got off the phone declaring Kate was having twins. “Must be in the genes.”

“How exciting” said Summer “do they know if its boys, girls or one of each?”

“They didn't want to say but I think they have an inkling” replied Madge bursting in to tears.

“What's going on Madge. This is wonderful news.” said Summer hugging her friend.

“I know it is, it's just that it takes me back to when I had the boys. Didn't know at the time there were two until Blake arrived and then the Midwife announced that there was another one on its way and lo and behold Mark arrived screaming the world down.”

“How didn't you know you were having twins?” asked Summer curiously.

“Well my Husband didn't believe in pampering a Woman. She was pregnant, not sick, so no need to go to a Doctor or such like. I guess I went along with his ways until I had to push and shove and got the end result..”

“When he found out there was two he went to the pub and everyone clapped him on the back for being such a virile man. Buying him doubles of whatever he was drinking considering he had managed to have his Wife deliver two all at once. He never looked back.”

“At first I believed we could be a family. After all we had got married and were in love, or so I thought. It took me a long time to give up on that dream and just protect my boys and that's how my life has panned out for years.”

Stunned Summer said forcibly to Madge “Well that scenario is not going to be played out with Blake and Kate. They do love each other, hell its plain for everyone to see just looking at the pair of them. Now it's your time to shine Madge as a Grandmother and as the Mother you have always been.”

Harrison arrived first with Holly arriving another twenty minutes later.

Everyone arrived in to Kate's room after her and the babies had been cleaned up and made presentable. It was a small crowd to say the least.

Kate leaned over and handed both the babies to Madge.

“Can you manage two Mum?” asked Blake.

“Got two arms that work very well thanks” replied Madge looking down at her Grandchildren that had been placed in them with adoration.

“Move over Mum, I want a shot” said Mark picking up the babies as if they were puppies. (Lets not forget he is a Vet).

A little voice piped up with Ali declaring she would take them home now and give them a bath. Being told that wasn't happening she threw a tantrum that was 9.5 on the Richter scale.

“Welcome to the terrible two's” Zac said “though she is a little ahead of her time.”

Kate rang Madge a week later. “Mum Madge I need your help!”

Madge was a little taken aback Kate had called her Mum, but in a very pleasant way. “How can I help you?”

“The twins won't sleep. I mean really won't sleep. When I bath them they are fine but when I put them in to their cribs they cry eternally. I am at my wits end.”

“Put them in a cot together. They spent a long time being inside your belly and it's only been a short time outside of it. The poor things are missing each other. That's the best advice I can give you” said Madge.

The next morning Kate rung her saying with disbelief in her voice the twins had slept through the night.

“Hope you got some sleep to. Keep me up to date on my little munchkins, ring me whenever you want.”

Summer watched the huge smile come over Madge's face when she hung up the phone and said “Saved another Mother from jumping off a cliff, I remember those days well.”

Jane and Michael arrived a week later at Blake and Kate's to meet the twins bearing gifts.

“Jesus Christ” said Blake “did you buy out the whole shop?”

“Once we got started we couldn't stop, plus the second one was closed by the time we got around to it” said Jane with her and Michael giggling.

“This is far too much” Kate declared “hell we haven't got the room for everything I demand you take it all back. Oh hang on is that a Teddy Ruxpin, I always wanted one of those. Oh and look Blake at these dungarees how adorable are they?”

In the end Blake and Kate opened one bag after the other while Jane and Michael erected the port a cot and placed both sleeping babies in to.

“Lets skedaddle before they change their minds” said Michael.
