Prologue

People are beautifully curious.
They cut themselves. They want healed.
They burn themselves. They want healed.
They burn others. They want justification.
But beyond all that, they just want love.
They live in their homes where their noise buzzes, a constant in their heads. And there’s never enough quiet to hear what I’m saying inside of their hearts.
There are always a few, though. A broken few who seek the slightest shadow of my face. And I reveal it as I look down, and they look up from the darkest parts of themselves. They quietly search me with their eyes. They dare to hope, a violent kind of endeavor.
And when I reach my hand down, when they take it, everything’s unlocked, inside out.
The truth breaks free.
