Act IV, Scene 3: I’ll Sauce Them

A subplot involving revenge is taking place at the Garter Inn. Caius and Evans have disguised themselves as Germans, and they ask the Host of the Garter to borrow some of his horses so that they can ride to England to visit a German Duke who has come to the English court. The Host agrees to rent the horses to the German visitors, but he intends to charge them far more than a fair price. The Host remarks to Bardolph, “I’ll sauce them” (8-9). He means that he will cheat them of their money. What the Host does not realize is that Caius and Evans plan to steal the horses.
