CHAPTER 4: Love the Skin You’re In
Summer sat on her bed with her phone. She scrolled through pictures on her screen.
The girls she saw had straight hair. Their skin was lighter. Their faces looked perfect.
Summer looked in the mirror.
She saw her curly hair. Her dark skin. Her round cheeks.
She frowned.
“I don’t look like them,” Summer whispered. “Maybe I’m not pretty.”
Her heart felt heavy.
She looked out the window at the Moon. It was big and glowing.
Suddenly, soft silver light filled her room. It wrapped around her like a hug.
Summer floated up, up, up… to the Moon.
When she landed, Mr. Peters was waiting for her. His eyes were kind. His gray locs glowed in the moonlight.
“Hello, Summer,” he said. “You’ve been feeling down.”
Summer nodded. “I don’t look like the girls online,” she said quietly. “Maybe I’m not beautiful.”
Mr. Peters shook his head. “Oh, Summer… You are already beautiful.”
Summer frowned. “But I don’t look like them.”
Mr. Peters smiled. He pointed to the sky.
“See the Moon?” he asked. “It has dark spots, light spots, round edges, bumpy places… but it still shines.”
Summer looked up. The Moon was different all over. But it glowed so bright.
“Your skin, your curls, your smile — they make you you,” Mr. Peters said. “You shine just like the Moon.”
Summer touched her hair.
“You don’t have to look like anyone else,” Mr. Peters added. “You are enough as you are.”
Summer smiled a little.
The soft light wrapped around her again.
“Love the skin you’re in,” Mr. Peters whispered. “It’s already perfect.”
The light carried Summer back home.
The next day, Summer stood in front of the mirror. She saw her curls, her rich brown skin, her bright smile.
She smiled widely.
She loved the skin she was in.
Affirmation:
“I am beautiful. I love the skin I’m in.”
“I love my skin. I love my reflection.”
Activity:
Look in a mirror and say one nice thing about your hair, your skin, your smile, or your style. You are beautiful as you are.
