Lake over Thunder

Following asks you to move with what is genuinely worth joining, adapting to timing and circumstance without losing your own sense of direction.

THE JUDGMENT

随:元亨,利贞,⽆咎。

Following: supreme success. It is fruitful to stay true. No blame.

THE IMAGE

泽中有雷,随;君⼦以向晦⼊宴息。

Thunder rests within the lake: Following. As evening falls, the wise person goes indoors and settles into rest.

WHAT THIS HEXAGRAM MEANS

Hexagram 17 follows Hexagram 16, Enthusiasm, in the received sequence: once shared excitement has gathered people together, the next question is what happens when that excitement asks something of you.

Following takes up the practical side of enthusiasm — deciding when to move with a person, a group, or a moment, and when to hold your own line instead.

The Chinese name 随 means to follow, to accompany, or to go along with, and it carries the sense of adapting your own step to someone else's pace 101

rather than either leading blindly or refusing to move at all. The hexagram is also commonly translated as Accommodation, since the gure is less about obedience than about a willing, discerning responsiveness to what the moment requires. Thunder settling beneath the lake, rather than cracking overhead, pictures strength that has quieted itself enough to move with the current instead of against it.

The judgment names supreme success, fruitful steadiness, and freedom from blame — a striking endorsement for a hexagram about yielding.

That endorsement is conditional: following only earns its reward when it is chosen with clear eyes, tested against your own values, and not simply surrendered to whoever moves rst or speaks loudest.

THE FIGURE

Hexagram 17 joins Lake over Thunder, one of the sixty-four possible trigrams pairings. Thunder is movement and initiative; Lake is openness, pleasure, and glad response. Together they describe a moment when en-ergetic action has learned to settle into a receptive form — thunder no longer crashing in the sky but resting within the still water of the lake, quiet and contained until it is needed again.

In the six-line diagram, counted from the bottom, the lower trigram Zhen, Thunder, opens with one yang line under two yin lines, and the upper trigram Dui, the Lake, closes with two yang lines under one yin line.

Reading the line structure of both trigrams together shows an active rst move beneath a responsive, welcoming surface, which is exactly the pattern the hexagram addresses: initiative that knows how to yield, and yielding that still keeps its own direction.

THE SIX LINES

Read a line only if it came out moving (a 6 or a 9 in the coin method).

1

Leadership shifts, meet it directly BOTTOM LINE

初九:官有渝,贞吉,出门交有功。

The one in charge changes course. Staying true brings good fortune.

Going out to meet others brings achievement.

The rst line describes a change at the top — the one in charge, or the guiding principle you have relied on, moves in a new direction. Rather than clinging to the old arrangement out of habit or waiting anxiously to see what happens, the line advises staying true to your own steadiness and going out to meet the new situation directly. Passive following invites confusion here; active, sincere engagement earns achievement. This line's change points toward Hexagram 45 —

Convergence, showing that meeting a shift in leadership with openness can gather genuine support around you rather than scattering it.

2

Choosing novelty over substance SECOND LINE

六⼆:系⼩⼦,失丈夫。

Bound to the young one, one loses the mature man.

At the second line, attention is caught by something young, new, and immediately appealing, and in binding to it you lose hold of a more mature, dependable connection. This is the danger of following at its most careless: chasing whatever is freshest instead of weighing what has actually earned your trust. The line does not forbid enjoying what is new, but it warns that you cannot keep both if the two genuinely compete for your loyalty. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 58 — Lake, where open, glad exchange replaces the

rmer bond you set aside.

3

A deliberate, correct choice THIRD LINE

六三:系丈夫,失⼩⼦,随有求得,利居贞。

Bound to the mature man, one loses the young one. In following, what is sought is found. It is fruitful to remain settled and true.

The third line reverses the second: here you bind to the mature man and let the young one go, a choice made with clearer judgment about what genuinely deserves your following. What is sought is found, and staying settled in that choice is fruitful. This line rewards the discipline of weighing two attractions honestly instead of drifting toward whichever is loudest. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 49 — Radical Change, showing that a well-founded commitment can become the ground from which real transformation is possible.

4

A gain that must stay honest FOURTH LINE

九四:随有获,贞凶,有孚在道,以明何咎。

In following, one gains something, yet persisting in it brings danger.

Holding sincerity to the path and making one's intent clear — what blame could there be?

The fourth line has gained real inuence or advantage through following — a position, a following of one's own, an accumulated trust. Yet persisting in that gain for its own sake brings danger, because it can start to look like the follower has claimed authority that was never theirs. The remedy is sincerity kept visible on the path, intentions stated plainly rather than concealed, which clears any blame. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 3 —

Sprouting, a reminder that whatever has been gained is still a beginning, not yet a settled structure.

5

Sincerity toward what is excellent FIFTH LINE

九五:孚于嘉,吉。

Sincerity toward what is excellent: good fortune.

At the fth line, following reaches its most trustworthy form: sincerity directed toward something genuinely excellent, without hesitation or hidden calculation.

This is the position of someone whose judgment about whom or what to follow has matured enough that the commitment itself becomes good fortune. It models the kind of leadership that earns followers by being worth following, and the kind of loyalty that is given rather than extracted. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 51 — Shock, showing that sincerity this settled can withstand sudden disruption and even be claried by it.

6

Binding taken to its furthest point TOP LINE

上六:拘系之,乃从维之,王⽤亨于西⼭。

Bound fast, then tied still further. The king makes an offering at the Western Mountain.

The top line pictures a bond tied fast and then tied further still, and a king making an offering at the Western Mountain — following carried past ordinary loyalty into ritual devotion. This is not coercion; it is the willing extremity of commitment, given freely toward something regarded as worth every remaining tie.

Few situations call for following this complete, but the line shows what full devotion looks like when it is genuinely earned. When this line changes, the reading points toward Hexagram 25 — Genuineness, where such complete sincerity

nally rests in simple, unforced integrity.
