Thunder over Earth

Hexagram 16 shows momentum built through one clear, trusted mover: readiness and shared eagerness carry a group forward, but only when timing and sincerity align.

THE JUDGMENT

豫:利建侯⾏师。

Anticipation: it is fruitful to establish leaders and to mobilize an army.

THE IMAGE

雷出地奋,豫;先王以作乐崇德,殷荐之上帝,以配祖考。

Thunder bursts out of the earth and stirs: Anticipation. The ancient kings composed music to honor virtue, and offered it richly to the highest power, joining it to the memory of their ancestors.

WHAT THIS HEXAGRAM MEANS

In the received sequence, Hexagram 16 follows Hexagram 15, Humility.

The traditional commentary on the sequence explains that a person who holds greatness yet stays humble will surely nd ease afterward — so Anticipation follows Humility as its natural reward.

The Chinese name 豫 carries two linked senses: joyful readiness and foresight, the ease that comes from preparing before a need arises. Hexagram 16 is also translated as Enthusiasm, since the single strong line at its 96

heart moves the entire gure the way a rousing call moves a crowd. Both senses matter together — this is not excitement for its own sake but momentum earned by sound timing and honest motive, the difference between a leader worth following and mere noise.

Only one line in the whole gure is strong; the other ve are yielding around it. That shape asks a pointed question: is your excitement coming from something solid, or are you swept along by another person's energy before you have tested it yourself? Anticipation rewards the person who moves in step with real momentum and warns the person who performs excitement to be seen.

THE FIGURE

Hexagram 16 joins Thunder over Earth. Thunder breaks out from the ground and stirs everything it passes over; Earth is the broad, receptive

eld that carries the sound onward without resistance. Ancient rulers read this image as an instruction to compose music and rites that honored genuine achievement, rather than noise raised for its own sake.

In the six-line diagram, counted from the bottom, ve yielding lines surround a single strong line at the fourth position. The lower trigram Kun, the Earth, is entirely yin — receptive and still; the upper trigram Zhen, Thunder, begins with that one yang line and carries two yin lines above it. One rm line initiating movement inside an otherwise soft structure is the whole logic of Anticipation: everything else responds to a single trustworthy source of motion.

THE SIX LINES

Read a line only if it came out moving (a 6 or a 9 in the coin method).

1

Excitement announced too soon BOTTOM LINE

初六:鸣豫,凶。

Anticipation announced aloud: misfortune.

The rst line sits farthest from the strong fourth line yet responds to it, and mistakes that distant connection for standing. It broadcasts eagerness before earning any real basis for it — celebrating an outcome that has not yet arrived, or claiming closeness to a project you have not actually built. The classical reading is blunt: this kind of premature announcement invites misfortune, because it spends credibility the situation has not yet granted you. When this line changes, Shock follows: a sudden jolt tends to expose exactly what was announced too early.

2

Firm judgment, decided quickly SECOND LINE

六⼆:介于⽯,不终⽇,贞吉。

Firm as stone, deciding before the day is done: staying true brings good fortune.

The second line holds the center of the lower trigram with quiet rmness —

steady as stone amid a eld of general excitement, unmoved by the noise around it. Its strength is discernment: it reads a situation clearly enough to decide within the day rather than drifting toward whatever mood is loudest. This is the model line of the hexagram, showing that true readiness looks like calm clarity, not eagerness. When this line changes, Release follows: a rm, timely decision is precisely what loosens a tangle that hesitation would have left knotted.

3

Watching another's ease THIRD LINE

六三:盱豫,悔,迟有悔。

Gazing upward toward another's ease: regret. Hesitating over it also brings regret.

The third line looks upward toward the strong fourth line, hoping to share in its momentum, but the two are not truly aligned — proximity is not partnership.

Acting rashly to attach yourself to someone else's success brings regret; delaying out of uncertainty brings regret as well, because neither choice is grounded in your own settled judgment. The line names a familiar trap: wanting the benets of another's readiness without doing the work readiness requires. When this line changes, Small Exceeding follows, asking for care with small, unglamorous details rather than a bold move either way.

4

The one trustworthy center FOURTH LINE

九四:繇豫⼤有得,勿疑,朋盍簪。

The source of anticipation: great gain. Hold no doubt — companions gather to you like a clasp binding hair.

The fourth line is the single strong line in the entire gure, and everything else in the hexagram moves because of it. Holding this position means becoming the reliable point others organize around — and the text is explicit that hesitation here is the real risk, not overcondence. Doubt yourself here and the momentum you carry falters for everyone depending on it; trust the readiness you have actually built and companions gather naturally, the way a clasp draws scattered hair into one binding. When this line changes, Earth follows: total yielding, asking you to let the structure rest rather than keep driving it.

5

Enduring a weakened position FIFTH LINE

六五:贞疾,恒不死。

A persistent weakness while holding to what is right: it does not end in death.

The fth line holds the ruler's seat but is soft where the fourth line below it is strong, so its authority is quietly overshadowed by a subordinate whose momentum it cannot fully control. The classical image is a chronic weakness — persistent, uncomfortable, but not fatal. Holding to what is right lets this position endure the imbalance without collapsing. When this line changes, Convergence follows: what could not be commanded alone can still gather real support once the position stops resisting and starts drawing others toward it honestly.

6

Waking from a late excitement TOP LINE

上六:冥豫,成有渝,⽆咎。

Anticipation kept in the dark: what has already taken shape can still be changed. No blame.

The top line sits farthest from the source of momentum and furthest from clear sight, so it is described as anticipation kept in the dark — excitement that arrives late, distracted, or unaware of what has already been decided without it.

The situation has already taken shape below; the only real choice left is whether to change your own stance to meet it. Because that change is still possible, the line closes without blame. Fittingly, this is the hexagram's unchanging line: when this line changes, Advance follows, rewarding the willingness to wake up and move forward rather than stay behind.
