DIFFICULT COMPANIONS

Difficult companions are not those individuals who have not yet reached our intimate level but rather those others who have made themselves loved by us and who, from one moment to the next, have changed their thoughts and behavior, imposing strangeness and uneasiness on us.

They have stood as pillars of faith, sinking in a heavy current of temptations...

They have shone as beacons of light at the head of the march and have faded into the night of human conveniences, driving us into shadow and disorientation...

However, having examined the matter with discernment and serenity, would it be fair to harbor pessimism or disenchantment simply because this or that companion has shown human weaknesses peculiar to us too?

Aware of the realities of the evolutionary field, in which we carry burdens of guilt and debts, deficiencies and needs placed on our shoulders in past lives, how can we demand from our loved ones who are on the same level as us, the position of heroes or the behavior of angels?

By this, we do not mean to say that the omission or desertion of people we have invested trust and tenderness are natural conditions for the spiritual action we are responsible for developing.

But yes, while regretting their less happy resolutions, it is imperative to pray for them in the spirit of fraternal tolerance, with which we must embrace all those who join us in the tasks of our earthly journey.

If Jesus recommended that we love our enemies, what guidelines should we adopt when dealing with difficult companions, if not to bless them with higher comprehension, since they lack greater dedication?

Given their different commitments, they cannot always immediately share our daily activities; however, in the right spirit, we can thank them for the good they have done for us and for the good they can do, sending them a silent message of our respect, affection, encouragement, and gratitude.

By fulfilling this duty, we will have enough inner peace to move forward by performing the obligations life has indicated to us.

We will understand that if the Lord Himself accepts us as we are, tolerating our imperfections and using us in service according to our capacity to be helpful, it is our responsibility to accept difficult companions as they are, waiting for them, in terms of elevation or readjustment, just as the Lord has waited for us.
