Mordecai Brown’s story parallels the old American story; one of rural birth, one of turning misfortune into something great, one of making hay in a wild, treacherous environment, one of being modest, no braggart, and finally one of being not compensated proportionally to accomplishments, but doing quite all right anyway. It is not a “modern,” progressive whine, seeking to capitalize on conjured “disadvantages,” but rather one of using what one has to succeed.
Mordecai Brown was an elite pitcher, a candidate for the best pitcher of his time, a candidate for the best pitcher of all time, maybe a candidate for the all time list of all players, not only pitchers. So, why do baseball fans know so little of him?
