Sox certainly weren’t helped by a pitching staff that tanked with a 4.88 team ERA, third worst in the AL.
At home in Fenway Park, they were virtually unstoppable, piling up a record-shattering 625 runs in 77 games for an average of eight per contest. To put that in some perspective, the Chicago White Sox scored 625 for the entire season.
No American League team took a worse pounding from the Red Sox’ than the derelict St. Louis Browns, for whom Boston notched 216 runs against in 22 head to head games, 19 of which are won by the Red Sox. Included in the Red Sox’ mastery of the Browns are consecutive thrashings of 20-4 and 29-4 at Boston on June 7-8, the latter game setting an all-time single game record for most runs scored by a team.
The Red Sox weren’t through in June. On the 29th, they outlasted
the Philadelphia A’s, 22-14, setting an AL mark for the most runs scored by two teams in one game.
