Coleman threw out Simpson, Bauer took Boone's fly in left and Hegan fouled to third in the eighth. Bauer's putout was his seventh, a no hit game record for an outfielder.
With a 1-0 lead, Reynolds took the mound for the last of the ninth to face Bob Lemon, batting for Feller, and fanned him on four pitches. Mitchell worked the count to 1-2, then rolled to second.
Avila was the last man and Reynolds gave everything he had. The first pitch was low. The next a called strike. Avila fouled one back to the screen. Reynolds put so much on his next that he fell to the ground and the pitch was low. Another low one and two fouls followed before Reynolds reared back, fired a fast ball that Avila missed for Reynolds' fourth strikeout to end the game.
Feller, although he walked three, did not allow a hit nor an outfield fly in the first five innings. Mickey Mantle sliced a double to left with one out in the sixth but was stranded. With one gone in the seventh, Woodling hit a high pitch some 365 feet for a homer over the right field fence and the only run of the game.
